The groundbreaking ceremony for LSU’s newest $200-million dollar dormitory was held Wednesday.

The project, also known as the “South Quad Project” is now the fourth phase of LSU’s housing development. This will bring an additional 1,266 on-campus beds across two residence halls for first-year students.

“Winning is a part of LSU’s DNA and when that winning translates into news spaces that expands opportunities for our students and strengthens our state, that’s the kind of success that defines us,” LSU President Wade Rouse said during his speech at the ceremony.

Chancellor James Dalton also gave his thoughts on why the new dorms will be beneficial for students.

“Where students live shapes how they learn, how they form communities, and how they begin their journeys at LSU,” Dalton said

The dormitory will be located across from the Business Education Complex and it will house students in the College of Engineering and the EJ Ourso College of Business.

It is expected to be done by Fall of 2027.

Basic math of $200M / 1,266 total beds = $157,977.88 per...

They’ll make that money back when these students graduate and join the workforce in state, right?

Right?

You realize LSU doesn’t currently have enough dorm space for their students, right?

And divide that by 80 semesters which is 40 years and it comes out to $1,974.72 per student per semester. The going rate for dorms today is ~$4,500/student/semester.

Looks like it is inline with a recent dorm project at Univ of Florida which came in at $157k per bed.

LSU shouldn't be building cheaply constructed housing. It needs to blend w current campus architecture and be attractive to prospective students.

$200M
If LSU was smart they'd put 200M into a poaching fund for elite professors. (STEM, not fluff)

Stanford, for instance, is the top of the food chain in STEM. They have hundreds of startup spinoffs out of their research departments that become multi-billion dollar companies. Stanford has a stake in all of them.

$4,500 is on the low end. We paid $5,800 per semester for my oldest at TXST, thankfully, only 1 year, and my youngest $6,400 per semester at TCU, and he has to live on campus for 2 years..

Greeaaat. Let's remove even more parking lots. The LSU admin better start building parking garages ASAP. Parking is already a major problem, and they're going to remove one of the bigger lots to put more buildings. LSU a bigger commuter school than they realize I guess.

We need shovels in the ground asap for the new library and construction management buildings. I am tired of people (rightfully) mocking the university over our third world library.

We were quoted $110k/room for building a $25 million complex at my college about six months ago. These are likely nicer, but I feel this should have been cheaper overall.
