Shocks me this guy was a leading man for a good 25 years with directors willing to play camera tricks with his height:
Some glaring examples in Top Gun:
#1. Kelly McGillis is listed at 5’10. Cruise is 5’7. However, in the scene where both are in the elevator, the camera makes it appear Cruise is far taller. Then in the scene where she chases him down driving her car, he’s again shown looking down at her. What was he standing on?
Was this guy just that good of actor that directors overlook his height, or are they confident enough in doing different camera angles they can make leading woman opposing him appear smaller in relation to him?

Most Hollywood stars have been shorter as over time because they are easier to frame with a female co-star.
It's not always like that but numerous Hollywood stars throughout the history of the business have been short.
An yes, they always shoot Cruise to make him look bigger. He also always wears hiking boots and lifts in public, just like Mark Wahlberg and RDJ. All of whom are like 5'6" - 5'7"

Ever heard of Alan Ladd (Shane)? He became famous for hiding his height. Leading ladies would stand in trenches, he would stand on a box. Or scenes would be shot on steps, w/Ladd a step or 2 higher than the actress.
Ladd is the most infamous example, but there have been many others.
Stallone - per Sharon Stone, when they did a shower scene he had to stand on a box.
Kirk Douglas - when a tall actor was cast in one of his films, he went berserk: "I told you nobody over 5'9"!!!", In Gunfight at OK Corral the director had to hide the fact that Burt Lancaster was at least 5" taller than KD
When Charles Bronson was just another character actor you could see how short he was - in fact there is an old TV western episode where he's bitter b/c people pick on him for being so short! After he became a star directors made sure to "protect" him.
Some actors - Pacino, Cagney, Richard Widmark - never seemed to care about it.

FWIW Bob Dylan also hid his height, preferring to be photographed like this so he'd look like a giant
But in 1965 Dylan was shot standing next to his producer Tom Wilson (my favorite black Republican Harvard grad from Waco Texas), Why Dylan allowed this pic to be taken, much less published, I don't know.

When I found out Kim Kardashian was only 5-2, I was kind of shocked cuz she is voluptuous but is obviously proportional.
So it made me investigate celebrity heights. There are some equally shocking reveals, both short & tall. Here’s some of the men:

Bogart was short also as I recall. Deniro is short and has been photographed wearing 4 in lifts in public.

Agreed. It’s pretty cool they were able to animate her wax figure so we can still remember what her movies used to be like back in the day.

Michael Clarke Duncan was "only" 6-1.
In the Green Mile they had the other actors standing in holes to make John Coffey look like Goliath.

Back then jocks were a lot smaller. Doc Fenton was 5-9, 165.

You don't realize how short most men actors are. I was watching Saving Silverman and all those guys are on stage with Neil Diamond and he looks like a basketball player next to them. I looked it up and he is 6 feet tall.
