I know they announced Boise St, Texas State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State are joining the PAC-12 for football. Does that start next season? And will the conference gain back bowl game tie-ins?

The new Pac-12 is set to launch on July 1, 2026, when conference play will begin for the new members. The 2025-26 academic year serves as a transition period for Oregon State and Washington State, who remain in the Pac-12.

Official Launch: The new conference era officially begins on July 1, 2026.
New Members: The new league will include Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State, along with Texas State, Oregon State, and Washington State.

Transition Year: For the 2025-2026 academic season, Oregon State and Washington State are operating within the current Pac-12 structure, before the new members officially join in July 2026.

The sec and acc were the only smart conferences not using the number of teams in their name

new league will include Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State, along with Texas State, Oregon State, and Washington State.

They should Add Cal & Stanford to this PAC 12

Texas State would do better in the Mountain West
with Air Force, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, San Jose State, UNLV, UTEP, Wyoming.

They are actually adding Northern Illinois away from MAC ....Weird

Does anyone know why the others don’t change the number? I get it with the Big Ten. It’s had that name for most of its over 100 year existence and has strong brand recognition.

The Big 12 hasn’t had 12 teams for most of its existence and the conference brand has a lot of negative associations - no defense conference and all its best teams left.

The PAC12 had 12 teams for barely a decade, and its results during that period were bad. It also seems like they could easily just brand it as the PAC.

Yes, and I don't understand why they didn't just completely merge with the MWC, even if they kept the PAC-12 name.

This isn't 1985 anymore. An 8 team conference can't function anymore.

The Big Ten actually only changed its official name to the Big Ten just 3 years before PSU joined the conference. The Big Ten was officially called the Western Conference until 1987 even though nobody really had called them that name probably since WW2. So the Big Ten really should have changed the name to Big 11 when PSU joined since they had the name Big Ten for such a short period of time. But they didn't.
