GF and I are thinking about going to the Highlands or Asheville, NC area after Christmas through NYE. Which is better this time of year?

Asheville probably has more city options, but Highlands is less crunchy.

Having been to both in the last couple years, I would do highlands.

Stay somewhere around Cashiers.
Easy to get to both, go to Caffe REL in Franklin.

I’ll be in Asheville for Christmas. You may choose to take that information as a positive or a negative.

Have you found places to stay yet? That’s a very popular time for couples to visit both locations. Highlands is especially limited if you want a nice B&B or hotel. They sell out quickly. I looked for my wife and I for next August and it appeared Old Edward’s Inn is already booked.

Found a bad arse AirBnb outside of Asheville that I like. Haven't found anything that I love in Highlands area. Need an AirBnb so I can bring my dog who will be her last xmas. Was supposed to go to Europe but pivoted due to dog health.

Highlands area for me.
We go to the area maybe once/year.
Want something unique?
Check in and around Cashiers. Not too far from Highlands.
High Hampton
Or a little farther down the road.
Greystone Inn at Lake Toxaway.
Near Highlands:
Skyline Lodge
Old Edwards Inn

How is that area in the January /February time frame for snow and ice? Not sure what that area gets. TIA.

Normally no issues, but a winter storm can happen and make lots of issues. So random luck of the draw if you get a bunch of ice and snow.

it just depends. Most likely it will just be colder, but the weather could be spectacular or freezing rain/ice/snow.
Currently 29 and Sunny in Cashiers. This next week will be spectacular - high in the 50's, and sunny, nights in the upper 20's.
I think for the OP the question is do you want a large city with all that is available or do you want a small town?
You can easily do a day trip to Asheville to see the Biltmore, etc. from Highlands/Cashiers.
