The nation’s average price of gasoline has fallen 5.0 cents over the last week and stands at $2.90 per gallon, according to GasBuddy® data compiled from more than 12 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country. The national average is down 17.6 cents from a month ago and is 7.3 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 5.1 cents in the last week and stands at $3.671 per gallon.
“Gas prices continued to decline in most states last week, while some price-cycling states saw temporary spikes to restore margins,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “With the national average falling further, we’re now at multi-year lows heading into Christmas. Diesel prices are also easing, and in the cheapest cities, averages have dipped into the low-$2 range, with a few stations still offering gas under $2 per gallon. Barring any major disruptions, prices are likely to stay relatively low into the new year.”

Over the last week, oil prices have held within a relatively tight range as competing market forces kept WTI oscillating between the upper-$58s and low-$60s per barrel. Geopolitical tensions, including recent disruptions to oil infrastructure abroad, provided some support by elevating supply concerns, but broader macroeconomic sentiment—shaped by expectations of future U.S. interest-rate cuts and lingering demand uncertainty—tempered any sustained rally. As a result, WTI posted a modest weekly gain, rising from about $58.91 a week ago to roughly $59.55 this morning, though it traded 53 cents lower early Monday. Brent followed a similar pattern, down 53 cents in early trade to $63.22, but still slightly above last Monday’s $62.80.

I don't know what y'all are paying back home but here in Denver, specifically by my office in Commerce City, we're paying $1.79.

Does it not concern anyone else on why inflation impacts almost everything except gas prices in the last 5 years? Something’s fishy

In 2024, global crude oil production remained stable, contrasting with its average 1% growth over the 2010-2019 period. Indeed, the 4% increase in the US crude oil production in 2024 was offset by a 2% drop in production in the Middle East, as Saudi Arabia and other countries of the region applied production cuts enacted by the OPEC and partners (OPEC+) since November 2022.
In a context of declining oil prices, the OPEC+ announced oil production cuts of 2 mb/d between November 2022 and the end of 2023, as well as an additional 1.65 mb/d cut over the May-December 2023 period. These production cuts were progressively extended from the end of 2023 to the end of 2026. In August 2023, Saudi Arabia and Russia also announced voluntary oil cuts until the end of 2023 (1 mb/d and 500 kb/d, respectively). In November 2023, eight OPEC+ producers - namely Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, UAE, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman - agreed to voluntary output cuts totalling about 2.2 mb/d (including Saudi Arabia’s and Russia’s voluntary cuts) for the first quarter of 2024. The measure was progressively extended until the first quarter of 2025. Overall, crude oil production declined in Saudi Arabia (-7% in 2024 after -9% in 2023), Russia (-3%), Kuwait and Algeria (-7% each), Kazakhstan, and the UAE. It also dipped in Mexico (-6%), Brazil (-1% after record rises in 2023) and Egypt. In Europe, crude oil production declined again (-3%, including -1% in Norway, and -9% in the UK).
On the contrary, crude oil production grew in large non-OPEC+ producers such as the USA or Canada (+4% each in 2024), in China (+2%), in Nigeria (+4%), and in Qatar (+2%). It also rose by 12% in Iran (OPEC country not submitted to quotas), whose crude oil production has increased by 36% since 2019.

Oil production in the U.S. continues to increase, and OPEC+ stopped cutting production and instituted increases in order to try to hurt the U.S. shale industry. That resulted in a "glut" that has triggered overall declining gasoline prices.

Remember when gas was going up everyone said “when gas price goes up, everything goes up”? I’d like to ask those people if prices are going to go down now.
