Cap guys

According to overthecap, the saints have 9.4 million left this season, and they have 8.5 over next season. With 147.5 million under in 2027, are the saints basically out of cap hell? Do they have to wait till 2027 to spend the available money or can they spend this offseason?

Loomis will probably think we are two vets away from winning a Super Bowl. He will give two wash up vets ridiculous backloaded contracts because he’s a fricking buffoon.

We’re definitely going to spend some of the money this offseason and piss off people who still want us to be in tank mode.
That may be a mistake it may not. A lot of people got in a tizzy this off season over the Chase Young signing, and that looks like a great contract now. He’s playing like a top 10-15 DE in the NFL this year and we have a top ten defense since he got healthy.
There’s a difference between our “all-in” approach of 2020-2022 and then just doing normal extensions and FA signings. We definitely can do some of the latter this offseason if they’re smart

Invision Loomis' face on this gif
An "easy" way to manipulate the cap with new signing would be to give a player a moderate singing bonus paid out at the contract, but hits the cap in years 1 - 5, a decent 1st year (2026) salary, and a larger guaranteed salary in year 2 (2027). You then have language in that contract to automatically convert a significant portion of that salary into a bonus on xx date, and you get to spread those funds over years 2-6.
This is how Mickey gets the "cap genius" title when the team is winning and will have those some people getting their pitchforks ready when they are losing.

Can't avoid spending some money when you only have 39 players on the active roster for next season. They also have $65.8M in dead money, with another $48.2M set to hit the books unless they extend Taysom, Cam, Demario or Foster before the new league year

There was only ever 1 year we were truly in cap hell, and that was the year we had to unexpectedly cut Galette after having already put ourselves against the cap having done all our other moves for the year prior to that.
But yes next year will be the first year we aren't cap constrained to only doing 2-4 big moves, if we want to make a huge splash. More likely we'll stay the course one more year on not doing many big moves and go in for 2027 after building a more solid core first in 2026.
If we wanted to next year though, we could easily clear up to $60+ mil to make many big moves, and still be well off in 2027 and beyond (basically only adding about $12 mil to the cap in each of the next 5 years). The problem starts creeping back in if we do that much every year several years in a row. 3-4 years is doable, but beyond that you start pushing up against the cap again (it also depends on how well you do with drafting and free agency, and luck with long term injuries).

The best time to spend is when your starting QB is on a rookie contract

Not there yet but outside of Loomis reverting to his old self the end is in sight.
They only have 40 or so signed next season. They'll have to fill the roster & make decisions on their own free agents. To do this & get under the cap they will be borrowing heavily from the 2027 cap. I'm sure Loomis will make 1-2 big free agent acquisitions (hopefully just one, a vet OG) borrowing from 2027 & beyond.
The best news is the dead money improves significantly after next season with Carr, Ram, & Tyrann coming off the books for good.

2026 is about drafting young players, like 2025. Not many FA's I see worth spending money on for a team like the Saints.
2027 will be the year for buy players.
Only FA money I could maybe see spending is going after a TE like Otten if he makes it to FA. Might also consider Pitts but not for the 11 million per year spotrac projects for him.

I am aware of that, but I differentiated it because Mickey can still minimize that number by giving any/all of them an extension before the new league year.

Ah I understand what you are going for now. Yes we can start even further under if any get extended.
Edit:
As an aside, without extending any of these or anyone else, just plain restructures will get us up to $65.5 mil in space, should we choose to go all in for some reason.
Olave is the only salaried player whose extension would really save anything, and that could be up to around $14 mil.

We should spend money on a vet guard and that’s it. You want to spend money on a tight end when we already paying JJ top 12 te money?
We need to trade down some and get as many top 100 picks as possible.
Drafting Sanker, Riley, Stutsman type players in the mid rounds and not buying expensive free agents is how u get out of this mess.

It’s also how you build the backbone of an actual team instead of just piecemealing shite together every year.

Who? What Vet Guard and for what type of contract?
Posted on 12/8/25 at 12:25 pm to BigPerm30
So if Mickey goes out and lands Russell Wilson on a 2 year $90 million contract that is 100% guaranteed, what will people like you be saying then?

I'm hoping that he doesn't get into the "I need to reset the market" mindset and they can work on a deal to extend him.
Of the ones that are about to have the void years hit, I can see them working with Demario if he really wants to play another 2-3 years, maybe save another $5M here.
Maybe Foster also, but his is a minimal hit/savings.
I think Cam is ready to retire, and they need to move on from Taysom.
