What was the climax of traditional bowl games?

Was it the late 90’s? I remember for years the Jan 1st lineup was immaculate but I can’t pinpoint when it climaxed before the BCS.

Im 36 but ill say 98-05, before they added the 5th BCS game in 06

For my childhood, it was halftime at the CottonBowl with the Kilgore Rangerettes

The 2007 Fiesta Bowl is the last non-championship or playoff bowl game I remember that actually meant something.

When the Independence Bowl still had watchable matchups.

For me it was the Gator/Cotton/Outback/Capital One all basically at the same time while you juggled recall on the remote during every commercial.

Seemed like there were only about 6 or 7 total bowl games in the mid 90s.

I'll agree with this.
I think the 2006 Rose Bowl between USC and Texas was the absolute peak of the bowl system. Inarguably the two best teams in all of college football playing what was the greatest game of my lifetime. But beyond that, 2005 was also a year where Alabama made the Cotton Bowl. Despite our late season collapse against LSU and Auburn, I was still excited to see Alabama play Texas Tech in that game. Even though it wasn't for a national championship it was still an intriguing match-up and it felt like it meant something.
I can't say a non-CFP bowl game has given me the same feeling since we transitioned to this new era of college football.

when they moved the cotton bowl to jerry world and the old orange bowl got torn down. that was a great stadium. they used to have a great parade in dallas to celebrate the bowl game. they quit doing it. not sure about the orange bowl parade but it used to be spectacular. only the rose bowl continues the traditions. growing up, there was nothing better than watching lindsey graham call the cotton bowl on cbs, curt gowdy call the rose bowl on nbc, and finish with jim simpson calling the orange bowl on nbc.

We’re climaxing right now.

I’ll take BCS format or prior with the split titles. Don’t care. Keep my Alamo and Sun Bowls relevant!

The last game that Keith Jackson called and it was a dandy

Historically Jan 1st was the big grand finale.
During the BCS era the idea of a BCS bowl still had some meaning. With only 2 spots in the title game, making the championship was not a realistic goal for most programs so making a major bowl felt meaningful. That feeling gradually declined as time went on though.
However now with 12 spots making the playoffs is an attainable and realistic goal for like almost every major program so anything else feels useless.

In the BCS era, being in a BCS bowl was a big deal and teams celebrated it.
Being in a new years day bowl was also thought of as a successful season.
As suspected, the playoffs ended that.
