Wow with the sexual innuendo. Never seen this one before and I love ‘80s movies. Plot: high school wrestler trying to drop weight to defeat the undefeated beast 2 weight classes lower while navigating high school pressures and a seductive dad’s girlfriend that has slept with almost everyone. Dads GF just planned a kiss and I’m paused with the two holding hands in a golden field…they bout to frick…let’s see what happens…

She wasn't dad's gf. She was a sexy drifter who happened to temporarily live in Matt Modine's house. Basically every teenage boy's fantasy.

Linda F was smoking. Early Madonna, plus some other great tunes. Shute was a tank.

This movie was required viewing for all HS wrestlers.

Thanks for clarifying. I live in the south, so wrestling isn’t even a thing.

Where do you live in the South that wrestling isn't a thing?

One of the best and most underrated movies of the ‘80s.

I grew up in the Deep South in the 1980s/early 1990s. Wrestling was certainly a thing.

The South?

South America?

I went to Tara HS with the Kristonis brothers. Both finished their HS careers with 1 loss. The elder Gus, got his sole loss in the State Championship of his SR year.

Ben won State 3 of his 4 years. the last 2 after he went up a weight class.

Why do we watch sports?

Louden Swain: You never took a night off to see me wrestle before. They'll dock you for that.
Elmo: Hey, kid - money ain't everything.
Louden Swain: It's not that big a deal, Elmo. I mean, it's six lousy minutes on the mat, if that.
Elmo: You ever hear of Pele?
Louden Swain: Yeah, he's a, a soccer player.
Elmo: A very famous soccer player.
[pause]
Elmo: I was in the room here one day... watchin' the Mexican channel on TV. I don't know nothin' about Pele. I'm watchin' what this guy can do with a ball and his feet. Next thing I know, he jumps in the air and flips into a somersault and kicks the ball in - upside down and backwards... the goddamn goalie never knew what the frick hit him. Pele gets excited and he rips off his jersey and starts running around the stadium waving it around his head. Everybody's screaming in Spanish. I'm here, sitting alone in my room, and I start crying.
[pause]
Elmo: That's right, I start crying. Because another human being, a species that I happen to belong to, could kick a ball, and lift himself, and the rest of us sad-assed human beings, up to a better place to be, if only for a minute... let me tell ya, kid - it was pretty goddamned glorious. It ain't the six minutes... it's what happens in that six minutes

Easily one of the best pop/non-traditional soundtracks of the 80s.

Opening credits and... Of course...

Fun fact: growing up I always thought Pink Floyd sang Lunatic Fringe. Then I saw Vision Quest, and was like: what the hell is Pink Floyd doing in a teen movie?

There is no way Private Joker could beat Shute. That guy was doing stadium bleachers with a telephone pole on his back,

Early Madonna
The earliest Madonna. Her first film appearance. Suddenly Seeking Susan came out a couple of months later. Madonna is in the film for a hot second, but the radio ads promoted the movie as "Featuring Madonna".

I grew up in S LA in the 80's and no school I went to had a wrestling team. There were a couple of private schools that had them, but it definitely wasn't prominent.

Here's a Louisiana high school wrestling history site. You can look through the schools in south Louisiana. I clicked on Catholic High and Broadmoor, their histories go back to the early 70's. My high school didn't have wrestling but I know that other schools in Lafayette did.

The only school in the Lafayette area that I remember having a wrestling team was ESA, and I never knew anyone who was on a wrestling team. Old teachers at Fatima said they used to have one long before, but not in the 80's.
