Or is it unlimited in any calendar year of recruiting?
I see kids moved down to 4 and wondered if they had to get bumped because of some type quota...

Not exactly, but usually it’s around 32, Correlating between the number of first round nfl draft picks. It’s not typically a hard figure though. Perhaps for some sites

It’s 32 every year. They’re the most likely to become NFL first round picks.

The people that make the rankings are skewed by their favorite teams. If a 5 star decomits from them and signs with a rival they may lose a star. Its happened enough

32 five stars by the final rankings to match 32 first round picks. On3 like to start with less and progressively add more as it gets closer to the final rankings release (January/February)

I wonder if there is data that shows the 5 star picks and how that translated to the draft. Just overall b/c they won’t all stay just 4 years, some more and some less.

There will always be kids that don't get recognized. Justin Jefferson was a two star. So was Jacob hester. Honey badger was too short. Lane does pretty good recognizing hidden talent.

According to some recruiting sites, you are a 5 star until you commit to LSU then you are automatically knocked down to a 4 star.. But if you decommit and flip to Bama then you could potentially skyrocket from a 2 star to a 5 star within a days span.
