Lots of talk and sh!t talk this year and before the season even started about how bad we were going to be including the defense. I myself thought the D was going to be the worse unit on the team. So I'm frying up some crow for dinner.
Mr Staley is doing a great job in his first year. Who does he keep, who does he get and who does he let go going forward.

Lets see

# Team Pass Yards Allowed Avg. Pass TD Allowed
1 Bills 163.2 12
2 Chargers 168.3 12
3 Browns 169.9 18
4 Texans 174.0 12
5 Vikings 178.4 14
6 Packers 186.5 15
7 Saints 187.7 20
8 Falcons 187.8 18
9 Broncos 193.3 11
10 Jets 196.1 19
11 Seahawks 200.7 16
12 Chiefs 205.8 13
13 Patriots 206.9 21
14 Rams 207.3 16
15 Dolphins 207.7 20
16 Panthers 212.4 16
17 Lions 212.5 25
17 Raiders 212.5 19
19 Eagles 218.3 12
19 Titans 218.3 19
21 Cardinals 219.6 17

Look at which teams we are better than
The other thing that stands out is TDs given up.

# Team Rush Yards Allowed Avg. Rush TD Allowed
1 Jaguars 82.4 7
2 Seahawks 88.8 7
3 Patriots 89.5 5
4 Texans 91.7 9
5 Broncos 93.1 9
6 Buccaneers 97.4 12
7 Packers 98.3 9
7 Colts 98.3 11
9 Chiefs 100.9 11
10 Browns 101.3 7
11 Lions 103.7 8
12 49ers 103.8 8
13 Chargers 106.9 14
14 Rams 107.8 4
15 Raiders 110.8 16
16 Cardinals 112.6 12
17 Steelers 117.7 9
18 Ravens 118.4 11
19 Panthers 118.7 16
20 Cowboys 124.7 13
21 Saints 126.9 10

Lots to compare of course. SOS. Old lineup. Teams run better and pass less etc etc. But overall this D has performed well under Staley all things considered. Thought he deserved some props

I'm happy with Staley's defense.

Everyone keeps poo pooing on our young BDs but they are ballers and only going to get better.

This team desperately needs a NT that can blow up the middle of the line and create havoc inside. Probably more so than an edge rusher at this point.

Kayden McDonald out of The Ohio St. would be that guy.

While his pass rush needs refinement, his ability to push the pocket backward from the nose creates the kind of interior pressure that makes edge rushers look like superstars.

shite, I'd just take a NT that doesn't get blown backwards. Beggars cant be choosers.

But yea, I feel good about Staley; excited to see what he can do with what you would have to expect will be a more talented and tailored to his system defense next year.

Just think how much better they’d be if they played motivated football knowing they had an offense that had their backs

It was the same story with LSUs defense this year

Nice thing is he was really shite on as a HC, almost became a meme. Maybe he will stick around for a few years instead of going right back to a head coaching gig.

Staley is a keeper. Imagine what he'd do with an average offense to compliment.

It’s going to take a minute for him to rehab his reputation as a head coach

Curious if he was in charge of defensive draft picks.

I noticed Stutsman isn’t getting a lot of playing snaps any reason why not?

I wanted to share a college stat and feel confident he’ll be a force in the coming years.

Stalbird, Ford, Warner and the Ol Man all ahead of him. He can make his mark next camp. Great feel for the game.

If Staley gets an edge guy like Reese, his D could be elite.

I thought I heard one of the radio talking heads say that the Saints just want to bring him along slowly. Said he would play the second drive of each half. Not sure if that's how it's playing out.

I actually feel better about Staley as the DC than I do about Kellen as a HC

If you can add a game changer like Reese, I think his impact trickles down to all position groups.. i.e. Kool Aid is not a bad corner, but you cannot expect him to lock down his side for an entire game like you (sometimes) could with Lattimore. But if QBs are worried about Reese and flushed from the pocket on every play, suddenly our secondary doesnt look nearly as lost.
