Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), the chair of the House Republican Leadership, who is butting heads with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), on Tuesday signed the discharge petition to ban members of Congress, their spouses and dependent children from owning or trading individual stocks.

“Throughout my entire 11 years in Congress, I have never purchased or traded a single individual stock because I believe it is unethical. Meanwhile, we have seen Members of Congress in both parties abuse their position in elected office by making millions on stock trades,” she said.

The discharge petition, which would override Johnson’s control of the House floor, is being pushed by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.).

Republican Rep. Tim Burchett (Tenn.), who is running for Senate, has also signed the discharge petition to force a House vote on the Restore Trust In Congress Act, which is backed by an assortment of House conservatives and liberals.

President Trump said in April that he would “absolutely” sign a ban on congressional stock trading.
