My Dad (from Michigan) used to actively root against Michigan, until an Ohio State fan tried to pick a fight solely after learning that my Dad was from the state.

It's certainly a "new age" vs "old age" way of thinking. Everyone who became a fan in the last 25 years has known a golden age of OSU against Michigan

As smart as good ole Nicky is, he’s failing to acknowledge that a national championship wasn’t really possible if you lost to Michigan, but it’s a new era.
Now, I just get annoyed listening to those mouth breathers beat their chest for another year.
Don’t know if I’ll ever see one, but an Ohio State/Michigan national title game might put into a hospital.

Saban was just asked this exact question on ESPN Gameday.
Saban said he would take a loss in the Iron Bowl if it meant winning a National Title
