So…I know this is a classic but I haven’t seen this since I was a kid. It came on ABC tonight so I put it on while wife was working on stuff in the kitchen and I was messing around on the internet.

What a great, silly, delightful and bizarre movie. The whole time watching I was struck with the creativity of the production and talent of the performers. That’s an era of Disney that was truly wonderful. I can only imagine how cutting edge the cinematography was at that time blending real actors with cartoon backgrounds, moving props, people flying through the air, etc. Was there another movie during the real Disney era this ambitious with effects?

Also, Julie Andrews’ was such a talent and a generational voice. Wow. D VanDyke gets grief about his accent but what a time where these performers could act, sing and dance.

Again…nothing new here but maybe I was just in the right mood to appreciate this masterpiece. Every Christmas watching these classics makes me feel nostalgic and miss that era of innocent class that films like this had during that time.

If you haven’t seen this in a while and are in the mood for a classic musical…give it a go.

Now go read how Tavers absolutely hated the movie and was mad as hell Disney used Julie Andrews.

It may not have been a true depiction of the source material but who cares. As a stand alone production I think it did pretty well. Also if it’s going to be a musical….yeah, I think Julie Andrews is a solid choice.

She obviously was a witch of the highest order. Lucky for us all she used her powers for good and to sing in a 4 octave range with perfect pitch.

Check out the sequels too: Mary Poppins Returns, Mary Poppins Forever, and Mary Poppins & Robin.

Considering Dick Van Dyke is coming up on 100, this isn't a bad movie to rewatch.

To me Julie Andrews is the greatest combination of singing talent, acting talent and beauty ever.

The Sound of Music is an incredible film but without her as the lead it wouldn't be as good, period. What an incredibly talented woman.

It's a timeless masterpiece that invokes nostalgia for boomers and Gen Xers. In a hundred years, they'll be even more fascinated by it. It's completely unique, some might even say a practically perfect film. (ok, that was weak)

Gene Kelly dancing with Jerry the cartoon mouse. Not as ambitious as Mary Poppins but it was also about 20 year earlier.

This is what they were doing in 1932. All hand drawn and colored, of course. First animation to win an Oscar.
