With a full quarter century now in the books, I thought it would be interesting to examine military conflict and the battles those conflicts have produced in the first 25 years of the 21st Century. They rank as follows:
10. Battle of Marawi (2017) | Moro Conflict | Philippines | 2,633 total casualties
09. Battle of Raqqa (2017) | Syrian Civil War | Syria | 4,345 total casualties
08. Second Battle of Fallujah (2004) | Iraq War | Iraq | 5,020 total casualties
07. Battle of Rif Dimashq (2018) | Syrian Civil War | Syria | 6,981 total casualties
06. Battle of Sirte (2016) | Libyan Civil War | Libya | 7,377 total casualties
05. Battle of Avdiivka (2023-2024) | Russo-Ukraine War | Ukraine | 75,000 total casualties
04. Siege of Aleppo (2012-2016) | Syrian Civil War | Syria | 76,273 total casualties
03. Battle of Mosul (2016-2017) | Iraq War | Iraq | 89,555 total casualties
02. Siege of Mariupol (2022) | Russo-Ukraine War | Ukraine | 93,234 total casualties
01. Battle of Bakhmut (2022-2023) | Russo-Ukraine War | Ukraine | 311,650 total casualties
The numbers for Bakhmut absolutely blew me away. Not since 1945 has there been a battle fought to that scale of human destruction and completely blows the runner-up on this list (from the same conflict) out of the water. 311,650 total casualties. For context, the bloodiest battle the United States hsa fought so far this century (the Second Battle of Fallujah) had just over 5,000 total casualties.

We should've done what Patton wanted us to do.

Wasn’t the Battle of Port Hudson one of the bloodiest of the Civil War…and actually happened after the war was officially over?

This gives the MIC boners. They love their blood money in the name of freedom.

It was in 1863. There were many battles with more casualties, but it was the second most costly siege, after Vicksburg.

Wars involving Russia historically have high body counts. Look at eastern front vs western front numbers during WWII.

That's what happens when you have godless communists running the show. They have no qualms about treating their populace as cannon fodder.

For some perspective, that is roughly 120-130K more casualties in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII.

It’s pretty sick what the Russians have brought back to the European continent. They have zero regard for human life.

There were places in Iraq Americans never controlled. Oh you could convoy around during the day some, but come nightfall you better be on a FOB. Mosul was one of those places.

Why? I’m at home with my family and we’re about to sit down to a Thanksgiving meal here in the next 45-60 minutes. Does it really matter when I post a topic like this?

My Thanksgivings are generally filled with love. I guess it is different in your house.

A lot easier to say that sitting at home 80 years later vs. being a battle-weary soldier in Europe who did his part to defeat the Germans and was ready to go home.

Just because you have a simplistic mind, only able to feel one emotion at a time, doesn’t mean the rest of us do.
