How many external storage units are you paying for each month?

The mention of imported crap brings this to mind. That and the proliferation of units a couple of miles from out house. They started with four and have undergone five expansions. We aren't a city, we're barely a small town and almost every home has a couple of acres around it. I can't imagine how many people think that their stuff is worth paying a monthly fee to store it away from where they live.

I knew one couple in NOLA who rented one for the three months it took to sell their house so that it would look as if the rooms were larger (uncluttered).

But where are the people coming from that make these units a sensible investment?

I used one for several months when in between houses from my move from BR to Spring.

Largely, it's women that drive the "need." There are some catering businesses that rented a couple of units near me after I sold my house.

A guy I know builds and operates them in NC.

Basically you can run the place with three employees….maybe two.

He’s got some very positive income.

zero. Never had one, never will. Money pit.
Worst I've done is a PODS unit for a few days when I moved.

My aunt has 2 but she's a semi-horder.

Not the point where you can't walk through the house, but you gotta move some things around here and there

My GF and I have 2 because she doesn't want to let go of her stuff and she moved in with me and my house doesn't fit all our junk. We should probably just both sell our junk bc it makes more financial sense.

We used one to store our things while looking for a house when moving back home. Most of the people that we saw using them were either apartment dwellers, people with strange hobbies or business owners who stored things off site.
But I just bought a container unit and set it up in a remote area of our property.

I’ve used one for a handful of months between moves. There are practical use cases for them, but nothing that explains the proliferation of them seemingly everywhere. It’s a perfect example of consumerism run amok.

Yeah, it’s wild. Every town’s got shiny new storage buildings even when nobody seems to need one. Guess people just buy too much and can’t part with it, so they ship it off to a metal box instead of admitting it’s clutter.

If you have any room you can just buy one of those small sheds for $600-$800 delivered.

We did this but of course the women filled it up with crap pretty quick

I can honestly say I’ve never paid for a storage unit in my life.

Have one. It's a big one. 12x30. Keep my 16.5 ft. car hauler trailer in it. Keeps the trailer out of the weather and rats from chewing the wiring etc. 5 minutes from the house. Expensive but necessary and convenient. only thing in there besides the trailer is a washer and dryer i'm keeping in case one of the kids need them.

Among her many other faults, my bat shite crazy ex-wife was a hoarder. At one point, she had 10 storage lockers for all the junk she had accumulated over the years.
