The Smashing Pumpkins celebrated their 30th anniversary of their iconic album in style at the first of their ‘Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness’ shows at the Lyric Opera.
I would love to go!!! Seems Magical
And Billy sounds pretty good

The part in the beginning talking about how the art scene not caring about success but Lennon blew that up cuz he wrote a lot of great songs and sold a lot of records. And that’s ok.
I hate the term sell out
Isn’t the point of writing great music is to reach the masses and sell a ton of records. But I also hate when my favorite obscure band becomes popular. It’s a personal conundrum.

Fan of the band “Smashing Pumpkins”, yet have no love for BC. Dude loves himself and reminds me of Morrissey. Corgan often refers to Melon Collie as “his” album and rarely credits the other band members. He’s even claimed that Melin Collie is on par with Dark Side of the Moon as one of the greatest albums in R&R history.

I get what you are saying, and you're not completely wrong; however, he really was the one writing and recording the album. SP is really just Corgan and Chamberlain. Iha and Darcy would not only show up incredibly late to recording sessions, they would outright not show up. It happened often. Corgan had to record their parts way too often, and it is why the band ultimately fell apart. I believe the same thing happened with Siamese Dream as well, but I've read quite a few times over the years about this happening with Melancholy

I wasn’t a big fan of Billy and the Pumpkins back in the early 90’s. I loved AIC, Soundgarden, Nirvana. STP probably my favorite. I just thought that they were weird because they looked strange and eccentric. But I listened to his interview with Rogan and was surprised at how down to Earth he could be. I really enjoy his podcasts as well. I saw a video of Chamberlain playing the drum part on one of their long, complicated songs and was blown away by that dude. I would put him in the same rare air as Peart or Bonham. I am going to have to dive into some of their music.

Welcome aboard. Billy is in a really good place right now, he’s not the disagreeable control freak he was in the day. He’s settled down and had kids and seems content.
And yes Chamberlin is one of the very best drummers of all time. Last time the pumpkins played here I saw him at Maple Leaf and he was studiously watching Johnny Vidacovich. No I did not talk to him.
If you’re trying to get more into their music, the obvious place to start is listen to the first three albums + plus the outtake album Pisces Iscariot. Siamese dream is their masterpiece.
After melon Collie their sound changed because Jimmy was fired from the band for a while and the general perception is Adore marked the bands decline .. I think that’s a lazy take. Adore and Machina are both good albums with gems like, Perfect, Daphne Descends, Appels and Oranjes and I of the Mourning.

I haven’t listened to his stuff lately, but I agree that the term “sellout” is typically bullshite. Sometimes artists evolve and their work may become ”God forbid” more “accessible”.
