Can someone make a logical, constitutional argument why seatbelt and helmet laws should exist?

‘But the cost of cleanup and EMT’

How much money have we sent / laundered in foreign aid?

My suspicion: These laws were driven by insurance industry lobbyists

It makes no sense that a state that has a seatbelt mandate doesn't also have a motorcycle helmet mandate.

What about subsidizing medical for unnecessary traumas?

Elon made an excellent argument once against the use seatbelts. Essentially he argued that airbags and safety features are so advanced that they actually cause more harm.

I know that wasn’t your point, but still interesting.

No.

Do you support seatbelt laws for adults? If so, why?

Certainly, but it would cost so much to get it in front of SCOTUS and I guarantee you, seatbelts and helmets are a lot less expensive.

Save your money.

Seatbelts keep you in place and help make sure you are in control of your car in crisis in addition to safety reasons.

Because the state (taxpayers) will be financially responsible for your dumb, disabled arse

But that shouldn’t be the case.

If a person decides to make choices the consequences of those choices shouldn’t be the responsibility of others. Why should any of us be compelled by law to take care of others?

That argument makes some logical sense.

Helmet laws?

Move to a state with no helmet laws then if you want that freedom bad enough. FWIW I never wear my seatbelt unless I go somewhere I know they ticket or I’m driving at high rates of speed and never have got a ticket. I really don’t understand those who constantly get tickets as it’s not hard to avoid them.

I wear my seatbelt and would do so absent a law... but yeah, I don't agree wearing seatbelts or helmets for adults should be law.

how many thousands of children since the 80s when the laws were created would have died or been hurt if seat belt and baby seat laws were in place?

He doesn’t have a choice but to include them. As often as they catch fire, there should be an exemption so people can escape more easily.

Airbags are great if your accident involves only a single strike.

No way to control / assure that.
