Auburn was selected by Montgomery Full Season Championship as the 1958 National Champion. both the AP and UPI (coaches poll) selected LSU.
From Google AI:
The Poll: The "Montgomery Full Season Championship" is a reference to a 1958 college football poll that declared the Auburn Tigers the national champion based on their 9-0-1 record.
Controversy: The claim is controversial because no evidence of this specific poll's existence has been found, making it a source of debate and ridicule in college football discussions.

Another reason why we shouldn’t clam 1908.
It’s embarrassing to claim old championships from past eras.
Just like when all the college stadiums were trying to “out-seat” each other

Wikipedia says we won the title that year. OVER!

It’s beyond laughable to dig up some source no one has ever heard of to make a claim to a title won by another team in your own conference who had a better conference record, a better overall record, a better strength of schedule, and a better average margin of victory. There is not a single argument in favor of Auburn over LSU that season.

The National Championship Foundation recognizes LSU (10-0) and Penn (11-0-1) as co-champs for 1908. LSU should claim it.

So a poll based in Alabama voted a college located in Alabama National Champs?

Auburn’s claim is as counterfeit as Billy’s funny money.
