Why doesn’t TD host its own image uploads?

It’s such a pain in the arse to go somewhere else upload an image copy of stuff bring it back here paste it into the image.
A simple upload button would be awesome.
Modern web capabilities make it extremely easy and cheap AF.

Yeah, the repeated postings of the same memes, babe threads, etc. would bankrupt Chicken.
All so you can avoid this terrorizing gauntlet:
quote:
Steps:
1) go to “ Postimages.org and click “choose images”
2) choose your saved photo from “photo library” and let it upload (takes 2 seconds).
3) copy the link on “direct link.”
4) come to your post and click “img” under markup next to the emojis.
5) paste the direct link on that and submit.
6) preview post to make sure it works and you are good to go.

A terabyte of images is $6 per month.

Maybe with that premium subscription, you'll get platinum access to do it.

Its certainly doable, but its not just some layup low hanging fruit unlock. You have to build and maintain the infrastructure for storing/hosting images, again not super complicated but it is something else that needs to be done/maintained. Also, now you are responsible for these dumbass images posted here...forever. Every old thread with a missing image is proof that some service thought hosting images was a good idea and later failed. So, I can see why TD doesn't want to mess with it.

Thank you for writing out everything that was in my head. Storage costs aren't that cheap for me for SMB Glacier storage.

Yeah, but most of that is a one time cost... you build referral-based URL with some basic security one time and the "infrastructure" is done.
To me the biggest liability is some dork uploading porn to a thread, but this place is overrun with admins reading each and every word posted to the site, so can't slip anything past that.

So in other words, it's just laziness...

It's not just the cost, there are copyright issues to think about. Some knucklehead uploads a copyrighted image and TD is on the hook for it the original owner wants to sue. But keeping them offsite, you put that on the poster.

Disk space to host thousands of the same image is not smart

Deduplication would take care of that but you would need some serious processing power to use that.

Not really, and you open yourself up to liability. They've already had issues with IP claims in the past simply for permitting people to post images hosted by third party sites.

It would really put TD on a whole nother' level while keeping the old school feel of a 90s message board in tact. I don't know about y'all but I love the old school message board feel of TD. it's like the last old school thing I hold on to dearly.

Is it worth it? We know most of the posters here are getting up there in age
