(Reuters) – Eli Lilly hit $1 trillion in market value on Friday, making it the first drugmaker to enter the exclusive club dominated by tech giants and underscoring its rise as a weight-loss powerhouse.

A more than 35% rally in the company’s stock this year has largely been driven by the explosive growth of the weight-loss drug market.

Once seen as a niche category, obesity treatments are now one of the most lucrative segments in healthcare, with steadily rising demand.

Novo Nordisk had the early lead in the space, but Lilly’s drugs – Mounjaro and Zepbound – have surged in popularity and helped eclipse its rival in prescriptions.

The company’s shares were up 1.3% at a record high of $1,057.7.

I love to tell the story of when I go to the doctor and everyone who picks up my chart EXCLAIMS (and it’s always the first thing):

You aren’t taking anything??? No prescriptions???

Like I am some experimental marvel. Shouldn’t the goal be to not take anything?

Monoclonal antibodies aren't what got them to a trillion.

My uncle worked there his entire life post college. Got pretty high up. He’s retired in his early 50s after a company buyout and does OK

Then did consulting on his time and made even more

fricking bastard

Feel free to drop how much of that trillion market cap is because of covid antibodies. I'm seeing a few billion in sales, which is well under 1% of a trillion.

You might want top check the stock performance during covid, professor.

Sorry if the covid point sticks up your arse so much. Maybe there's a cream for that.

November 2020 it was just a tad over $200 a share. When they stopped using them the price was all the way up to the $250 range. Now they're up to $1060 a share it was definitely covid that got them there, not lazy fatties

Yeah, 200-250 is way more than 'less than one percent. Many other pharma companies grew by several multiples.

Covid and crony capitalism. That's what I said and neither is wrong. Sorry if that upsets you, that your butt hurts over this one little point.

Clearly, you're venting because of some other shite. Good luck with that.

Sure, but at no point were covid monoclonal antibodies the only product they were making in that era. A few billion in sales in that era was not the sole reason for those gains. But let's pretend it was. You've jumped to the 5% range, which is less than sales tax

Ironic statement is ironic.
