Matt Campbell, Iowa State head coach

Based on some of the guys AD Scott Stricklin has hired in the past, Campbell seems right up his alley in terms of temperament and having a quality résumé at a smaller school. There’s a case to be made he’s the best coach in Cyclones history. He’s won a lot at a place where that’s not easy to do. He’s been in the mix for bigger jobs the last few years (including in the NFL) and might be just the type who can get Florida back on track quickly

Campbell is a great coach, but will be a tough pull from Ames. He's got deep roots there now. He'd have Florida as consistently good, but not sure if they could win the SEC these days.

tbh Iowa state might be a better program in 2025 than UF after what the UAA had done to it

Teams have tried including the Lions offering a $85MM package a few years ago he turned down.

Yes. He’s turned down multiple offers including the NFL (Lions). Matt will retire from Iowa State.

Was my same thought about Bama getting Deboer and why I was happy that Lanning went out of the SEC if he wasn’t coming to LSU. I’d rather not see really good football coaches hired at the schools I have to compete against.

For the same reason Mullen failed- will he be willing to scale up the way he does things to a top-tier P2 level? We saw Mullen, who we all know can coach, fall flat at UF because he just refused to give a shite about recruiting. He wasn’t willing to adapt to a different situation.

Now, I know the landscape is different now with NIL and the Portal, but a coach from a smaller program still has to be willing to adapt to more responsibility and more demands. They definitely have to accept much higher expectations. Again with the example, Mullen wasn’t willing to change and UF fans were not going to accept him acting like he was still at State.

Campbell has said no to a lot of offers over the years because he’s waiting for a particular job or one of a small set of jobs to open up. However, a few schools have passed on making the offer, and I think the above has something to do with that. If UF’s AD is smart, he will require assurances that he’s willing to do what’s necessary to win at a program of their size.

Now if Campbell was willing to go all-in on recruiting, NIL and the Portal at a major program- that would be pretty intriguing.

I’m a Campbell fan. I think he’s underrated. Florida would certainly have upgraded replacing Napier with him.

People downplay Campbell because they’ve stagnated a bit but just getting Iowa state to a consistent 8-4/9-3 is incredibly impressive.

Cambell can coach. Would be a great hire. Just wonder about fit. What happened with Kingsbury?
