Despite wealth disparity in the United States being a much-discussed topic over the past decades, the true size of the income gaps between the top 1% and the rest of the population is consistently perceived as smaller than it is. According to a YouGov survey from January 2022, U.S. Americans believe that ten percent of households in their country have an annual income of more than $1 million. As our chart shows, this couldn't be further from the truth.

In reality, less than 0.5 percent earn that much per year when taking into consideration data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The difference between perception and facts is even more pronounced when looking at households with an annual income of more than $500,000. While the median weighted responses from survey participants suggest that one-fifth of U.S. households belong to that bracket, it's actually the oft-cited top 1%. On the other hand, U.S. Americans are overestimating the share of people having to scrape by with less than $25,000 per year. Instead of the perceived 35 percent who earn less than $25,000, the share stood at 18 percent in 2020.

no child it's not even close, here's a list of people who don't make 500k a year, your primary care physician, your accountant, your lawyer, your dentist, 500k a year is a lot of money it allows you to live a life where you really don't think about money. i don't know any better way to describe it than that.

so we want to get our up stairs bathrooms completely renovated before our first grandchild arrives in may the one thing we never even consider was the cost. just the time line

that's the great thing about money. it's freedom from want and fear.

It’s not quite that bad, but $100K isn’t shite anymore.

I’d say around $175k is like $100k pre-covid.

No, they just want to control everyone's money. Starting with the wealthy seems like a good idea to them and will get them more votes. And then they never can seem to implement their plans.

Their ideas are bad (can never work in this country to the extent they want). Their plans worse and execution is non-existent. Yet, they want you to vote for them.

I don't know. Sounds like a losing deal

I do taxes for a living.

You’d be surprised how many people don’t make six figures.

Stupid Democrats that push the narrative. They are trying to convince the 51% that don't pay taxes that it's easy to tax the rich and solve all of our problems when they are already paying the bulk of the taxes. But - you knew this.

Yet another example of perception separating from reality.

In 2018, the percentage of American households earning incomes above $100,000 was 30.4% ( LINK)

Inflation adjusted, $100,000 in 2018 equates to $129,000 today.

In 2025, the percentage of American households earning more than $500,000 a year is less than 1%. Surveys suggest the public believes that 1% number to actually be 26% which would fall in line with your post.
