Jeep to start production of the new Recon SUV next year

The problem: It's going to start at $65,000 and will be all electric. The tax credit for EV's expired in Sept 2025.
Imagine how cool this could be if it THIS was the new Cherokee SUV, had a gas engine, and costs $35,000. This could be an excellent modern day Cherokee with that styling.
Opportunity missed. They are trying to introduce a mainstream EV after the tax credit has long since expired.

I like the body style. Should be gas powered for sure.

So a ripoff of the Bronco Sport.
No thanks.
No thanks.

are Jeep and Ford in a contest to see who can out imitate the other?

4.0 inline 6 would do nicely

I would even take a plug in hybrid. But EV only is just foolish right now.
EV's need excellent aerodynamics to have longer range. This box on wheels isn't ideal for that kind of EV tech. They should have given this EV tech to Dodge or Chrysler to try in a smaller, Model 3 or Model Y shaped vehicle.

It boggles my mind that these CEOs who get paid millions per year still can’t comprehend the fact there really isn’t any appreciable market for EVs other than possibly small sedans. It’s at best a niche market. People who want an EV, buy sedans, they don’t buy SUVs and trucks. People who buy trucks and SUVs want internal combustion vehicles.

Laugh all you want.
But the Bronco Sport is highly successful. It's sold so well that Ford has canceled the Escape to allocate more production capacity to the higher margin, more popular Bronco Sport.
I know the 3 cylinder model is a grenade waiting to happen since you actually need to remove the damn crankshaft to change the wet belt that operates the oil pump. I'm not saying the Bronco Sport is a GOOD vehicle. I'm just saying that the styling and packaging is very creative.

So they're making a Ford Bronco?

Just what the consumers want: A Jeep that will burst into flames if you drive it through water!

yea, would be much better as the next gen Cherokee.
Also a straight rip of the Bronco/Bronco sport. Which is fine because both of those are good looking vehicles. Though this looks absolutely retarded with no doors.

I wish they would bring back this engine.

I've owned several Jeeps and always loved them, but in this case I like the looks of the Bronco better and the electric drivetrain is a dealkiller for me

I'd take the 2.0L turbo or the 3.6L Pentastar V6 if that's what they can offer for $35,000 or so.
Both better ideas than a $65,000 EV. This is a mistake. That company has had a lot of major missteps lately:
- The elimination of the 5.7L HEMI (only to bring it back after a year of poor sales)
- The two nearly identical Jeep full sized SUVs instead of spreading this over multiple brands with some distinct character and styling - correcting this mistake only after some Grand Wagoneers collect dust on dealer lots for YEARS.
- The Dodge Hornet. Someone had to know conceptually that a $40,000 compact hatchback is a non-starter for any company but especially Dodge, which is known for muscle cars.
- Cancelation of the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger/Challenger without a sufficient gas powered replacement
- Leaving Chrysler with a single model - a minivan
- Bringing the next gen Dodge Charger out as an EV. At least continue making the older model in paralell for a few years.
- Cancellation instead of replacement of the Jeep Cherokee and being absent from that highly popular market dominated by the CRV and RAV4.
- Lack of mid sized pickup from RAM
- Not being able to exploit the EV market while the tax credits were here - bringing them to market in weird products (Dodge Charger) and doing so far too late. Now they've completely missed the boat.
The only things they've done right as a company was combining their domestic brands into the same dealer, bringing the Fiat Ducato to the US as a Ram-based fleet van, decent execution of the latest Ram pickup, and investing heavily into the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee product lines. But those decisions were made years and years ago.....two CEO's ago.

To me, the Bronco looks half Land Cruiser, half Range Rover

Yeah. I'm not saying the next gen Cherokee is a bad product.
It would make a fantastic hybrid Dodge crossover and would probably bring some new buyers into that brand.
I think the only thing Dodge has is the horrendous new Charger and the ancient Durango (which itself is a decent vehicle and never lost its optional HEMI V8). They could use something in the compact crossover segment. Outside of pickups - this is the most popular segment for Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, and VW.
Dodge doesn't have anything there except the discontinued Dodge Hornet, which was too small, too unreliable, and too expensive.
