Why do people have such a negative view of BR?

I’ve lived in BR for over 30 years and have never had anything stolen from me, never felt threatened or attacked by anyone, never had an issue with schools, have enjoyed low cost of living in terms of income taxes and property taxes, have entertainment of LSU sports, festivals, farmer markets, concerts, and good restaurants. We have a close community of friends and generally people are always lending to give a helping hand even if it’s someone I just met. I don’t understand why there is such a bad reputation of the city.

One of the literal most dangerous cities in the US with the worst traffic infrastructure known to man and no good non-magnet public school options? Yeah I wonder what people can find to criticize.

I’m going to guess that you don’t travel much. Do yourself a favor and visit other places, you’ll see why people flee from BR.

Baton Rouge will always be home to me, we just recently moved our family and I have zero intentions of coming back.

You've never lived anywhere else, have you?

Everyone thinks the cost of living in Louisiana is low because it's in the south. It's very expensive to live here. We have the highest sales tax in the country. Among the highest car insurance rates, etc.

I moved to central Illinois for a few years in the 90's and was shocked at how much cheaper everything was.

That’s your problem. You don’t know the difference of how better life can actually be.

Move to a more attractive city and you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it 30 years ago.

I lived in BR 30+ years and feel the same except for the schools part. Now living right across the parish line in the AP bc I have school aged kids. Once the kids are all out of school, we'll be looking at moving back to the right areas of BR.

Only people that do are those that have lived in other cities….

If you have never left, you don’t know what you don’t know.

I lived in Baton Rouge; grew up there; from 1979 to 1999. It was a pretty good place to grow up in. Crime was pretty much regulated to north Baton Rouge. I was away from Louisiana from 2000-2005 and upon my return settled in St. Tammany. Katrina came through and really gave Baton Rouge a kick in the arse population-wise and demographics-wise. My folks still lived in Baton Rouge until 2015, so my family and I visited them often. My folks had lived in Baton Rouge from 1977 to 2015 when my old man retired, and they couldn't wait to get the hell out of there and come to Madisonville. Baton Rouge had just really changed, and not for the better. You just have to be away for awhile and come back to see the difference. It's just not the same city it once was.
