Anyone who requires government support should not be allowed to vote

If you are a dependent, who should lose your voting privileges. This is equivalent to a child having a say in how a house is run. The child doesn’t get a say because he is wholly dependent on the parents to provide and take care of them. Someone who needs to be fed, housed, clothed, etc should not have democratic power and control over our country with their vote.

If someone wishes to get off of the government programs and can show they have been off for 5 years or some amount of time, they can have their voting rights opened back up

But if someone feels they need to go onto welfare for a while, they have to agree to give up voting during that time.

Easier path is just to get all the takers, to the greatest extent possible off the payroll. Let the whining be damned

What part of the Constitution would block this?

This is not taking voting rights away.
It’s simply saying, if you would like these services you don’t get to vote. If you want to vote, don’t take the services.

We place restrictions on felons and children. We can also do the same to the leeches.

Are you testing out ideas for 1985 or something?

As for children, there is a specific amendment about that, so that's not an argument.

And you're exposing the flaw in prohibiting felons from voting more than supporting your hot takes.

And this is 100% taking away voting rights, which runs counter to the point above.

The voting rights are still there for everyone. If someone chooses to release their voting rights in favor of recording welfare, that is all on them. They can choose to hold onto their rights if that is more important that free Mountain Dew and Doritos.

Cite the part of the Constitution that this would violate?

We should have a resident/citizen system in this country.

I have held that opinion all my life - way before welfare became a 'way of life'

And welfare itself needs to be tightened up so that only the truly needy get it - NO able bodied adult should be able to live off the backs of working people.

And they certainly should not be able to vote themselves MORE $$ from the pockets of working people.

Obese people should not be able to get food stamps or any other sort of free food assistance - it should be a crime to give food to obese people.
hu
We need to establish work camps for supplying these needs - they can be used to clean up parks and highways etc. Some personal effort needs to be provided in exchange for food. Trustworthy ones can be used to provide day care for other poor working parents.

I disagree. I think anyone who works and is a legal citizen, should always have the right to vote. Workers get taxed for the money that the government uses to pay for these programs. So if someone is working, and also is on food stamps to help them out, they should be allowed to benefit from the money that is being taken from them in the first place. And yes, they absolutely have a right to have a say in this country, and be allowed to vote.

If you want to argue, still, that they shouldn't be allowed to vote, then I'll argue with you and say that if the government should not allow them to vote, then they should stop taking money out of their checks for welfare programs.

The fact that it's a (sometimes fundamental) right. This would not pass any of the various judicial tests to burden that right.

Any sort of bargain that you're portraying would violate those rights and be ruled unconstitutional. It would be like entering into an illegal contract with another person: void and unenforceable.

The felon stuff, while shaky in rhetoric, does at least have a punitive aspect relating to criminality. That's not a bargain, however. And it, so far at least, passes the various judicial tests.

Where do you draw the line? The problem is everyone is on the take.

I can’t think of a single industry that doesn’t have some scam regulation or license that protects their business. The entire medical industry wouldn’t be able to vote.

What if those folks who “pay” income tax receive tax refunds in an amount that is larger than the amount of income tax they pay?

I don't know anyone who gets a larger refund than the amount they paid, without having child tax credits added in.

What if the representatives increasingly vote in legislation that makes more and more people dependent on the government? How are we supposed to get rid of those reps moving the country into socialism if people are increasingly unable to vote?

Been saying this for decades.

Caveat: the disqualifying benefits are not those that have been paid for (i.e., SS, Medicare, veteran's benefits don't disqualify because the recipient has paid for them)

This is fair but there are no other ways to fund those programs outside of new taxes
