DDR5 RAM Prices

I had been paying sort of attention to the massive hike in DDR5 prices (up 171% YoY.)
To personalize it a bit, I looked up the cost of the 128GB of RAM I bought in July in prep for a build I did last month. 128GB of this:
Cost me $291. Today, it is $582. (There is a 10% off coupon on all RAM at Amazon that expires in two days, which I'm not accounting for.) No, I have no use for that much RAM, but I'll also be using the same mobo/RAM for at least five years.
It seems my tactic of buying components at low cost over six+ months really paid off.

I paid $114 for 32gb (similar to yours, Corsair Vengeance, 6000/CL30) in July. Even with a price bump in July, 64gb would not have topped $250. Today, 64gb is $450 and 96gb would be about what you see for your 128gb (at least on Amazon).

There’s currently an AI induced run on RAM. Whether it’s a good idea to buy over time or wait for a return to normalcy remains to be seen. I’m hoping the RAM industry is more robust than the GPU industry.

It's more commoditized than GPUs, for sure.
I think AMD provided stability here. Knowing a socket and RAM config will be valid for a couple of processor generations is antithetical to the Intel approach. That generated uncertainty for decades. I can plan out two processor gens, but Intel couldn't give me that. Admittedly, I knew I wanted to be off the Intel socket train in the 90s when I was broke AF, and paid tangential attention because of the LGA era. Every year or every other year, a new socket.

Did even need to sell or want this high of a sold price on all ten memory sticks of ram I just sold. Was really surprised. Did not even realize I had so many extra memory sticks collecting dust.
If memory was not so small and easy to send off most likely would have just gave away locally somehow.

That crucial memory is probably worth holding on to.

I have an AM4 w/ CPU and 64GB of DDR4 in it I meant to list. 2 32GB kits of DDR4 alone are listed for what my 128GB of DDR5 cost. I need to cash in.

I got 2 sets of 64GB in April. $330.
Now anywhere between $500 - $900 depending on the scalper selling the remaining ram.

Is it time to upgrade my Video Card? I got screwed the last time I wanted to upgrade by Bitcoin miner and the AI buying craze seems worst.

DDR4 has now taken note... prices going insane as well.
Out of morbid curiosity, I had to look - Last year I bought 256G Samsung DDR4 ECC sticks 16x16G NEW, for an X99 project, my cost was $150.... same 256G bundles are listing today for over $900 on the low end.

I just sold a 64gb set I had from an upgrade earlier this year for $450.
The 96gb set I'm currently using is going for $905 on Amazon. I paid $175 back in March.

Crazy that in 2023 I got a Microcenter bundle for $549:
AMD Ryzen 9 7900X
Asus B650E-F AMD Motherboard
Gskill Flare X5 64GB, 32GBx2 DDR5-6000
and now just the ram alone is $750.

I got a free 16GB DDR5 kit when I bought my new processor, sold it in July for $36. The cheapest auction at eBay is currently at $100 with 3 days left. It will probably sell for about $140.
