This lawsuit is just posturing by Kelly. $25m & $30m offers weren’t enough.

But the lump some number to settle is still there.

I say it will settle for around $40m.

This whole thing is legal posturing.

It isn’t getting muddy

The question remains…
Did he violate his contract and does LSU really have grounds to fire him for cause? We definitely botched our part

Of course it is posturing.

Both sides will push until the very end, and the details of the settlement will never be known, and only the amount will be divulged.

Right. Either going to settle or pay it. It's just the normal crazy day around here

It’s posturing for larger lump and it’s not hard to figure out why.

In his letter, Kelly said he’s open to settlement if it was financially correct.

If you understand taxes, earnings on total buyout vs settlement, it’s easy to figure out.

He wants settlement and not have to seek another coaching position.

The magic number is $38-$40m

I agree with you. I thought from the start that ~$35mm was likely the lowest that Kelly might consider, but $40mm likely more accurate.

Kelly knows he's damaged goods now coming off a failed LSU experiment and no certainty he gets a great rebound opportunity. He'll accept a number that he's confident would allow him to surpass $54mm based on additional coaching compensation.

Sure I'd bet a Boston College or Arkansas-type job might pay him a 4 year deal at $4-$5mm annually. And that would allow him to surpass $54mm total comp, but also some risk that this doesn't play out.

I'd speculate that LSU was hoping by introducing the potential "for cause" firing that Kelly would be more willing to negotiate a number more to their liking to avoid any additional public discussion of Kelly's potential wrongdoings. But Kelly has essentially called their bluff by filing the lawsuit and making the "for cause" attempt public.

This posturing by Kelly however makes me think it's more likely that his preferred outcome is to be done with coaching rather than taking a position at a clear Tier 3/4 program without championship aspirations. If that is the case, the calculus might shift up towards a lumpsum closer to $45mm (which is around the present value of his contractual payments assuming he can get a 5-6% annual return).

THIS is all that matters. The lawsuit is just a motivation tool. Fans should stop working to add drama to the situation; THAT"S what will harm LSU long-term, not firing a coach.

The real issue is the governor inserting himself and this all being overly public.

It’s really not out of the ordinary other than those two issues.

I doubt BK is willing to negotiate and settle on the amount. He's willing to negotiation on the payment schedule.

Settlement is going to be 38-44 Mil. But of course it could not be easy.

Kelly will go down in history as the only former LSU coach that couldn't get a free cup of coffee after his tenure.

This is likely if coupled with an elimination of any deductions for a salary at a new job, and now, I suspect, a declaration that this was not a firing for cause.

25 and 30 were way too low, considering what was owed.

45-46 million today is likely the acceptable amount for 54 million over 6 years.

They may have been able to negotiate down to 40 million to remove the "seek work" clause, but now it is getting into the range of LSU actions harming his future career opportunities and a possible suit for more money.

If LSU can walk away for 45 million, they should take it and end this misery.
