The Mystery Of Blake Baker (At Least To Me)

Blake Baker is highly regarded among his peers and many (allegedly) knowledgeable football fans.
However, 3 mobile QB's ran at will against us, on Saturday we gave up several long pass plays, on shorter routes, receivers found significant gaps in our zones, and we consistently and repeatedly take bad angles on running backs and QB's, allowing what should be losses to become gains.
So what is this slow learner missing? For a coach who is highly touted and regarded, why, over the last 4 or so games, has our defense performed so poorly?
I'm in no way excusing our inept and feckless offense, but Sloan and Brady's lack of effectiveness has already been beaten to death. But with regard to Baker, why has there been such a disconnect between reputation/perception and the product on the field?

They gave up 49 to Texas A&M at Tiger Stadium and 45 last year. They need to move on from Blake.

He’s apparently not a fan of a cage rush on mobile QBs but this whole season is a shite show so I have no idea how much top line installation was given to him. I feel bad for Blake; to a degree.

Doesn’t use the spy and plays too much man vs mobile QBs who can’t throw. The exact opposite of what you want to do.

Man i get the aggrevation but those are probably the three best scrabbling QBs in the country. Sellers isnt far behind either. Its a issue but we had guys in positions to make the plays on alot of those breakdowns, they just didn't.

We play a traditional 4 man front and have 3.5 sacks from our DE’s all year long- that’s not a typo.
We have to blitz almost every down to get pressure on the qb, let’s see what he can do with some pass rushers

Against Vandy and A&M our linebackers and DBs took some of the worst pursuit and tackling angles I’ve ever seen from a defense. It’s like we were purposely trying to overrun and completely take ourselves out of plays.

Just look at what Jayden Daniels accomplished against that vaunted Blake Baker defense vs Missouri in 2023. 49 points, 300 yards passing and 4 TDs and 150 more yards rushing. That should have been a glaring red flag at the time but LSU still barreled ahead and hired him.

Why the heck did they hire him? LSU is notorious and has been for years for hiring poor assistants.

Probably for the other 7 games that he has kept us in. Just my guess

Softness in tackling wrapping up is what is missing most in my opinion. Tackling is what matters most. Being in position is important, but once you get there. You can't just bump someone down. You need sincere, aggressive, meanness tackling.

I have eyes. He’s overrated AF

If Harold Perkins gave a shite, it would be easier for lsu to corral mobile QBs.

I think our defense did pretty good Saturday. That was even without Weeks.
You really have to look at each game individually and then as a group for trends. Most games they get better the second half. Not counting TAMU bc the whole team gave up on BK. Even that game we forced turnovers the 1st half and only lead by 2. Against Ole Miss and Vandy we got stops and the offense couldn’t do anything.

The defense is exhausted from being on the field too much. When you are constantly having to go back on the field after 3 and outs it’s demoralizing.
That being said - our 2 highly paid DE’s (Pyburn and Payton) have not lived up to the hype. Their lack of pressure is brutal.
Baker is not the problem and I hope the new coach keeps him.

Like the Greek God Achilles - he has that one weakness that keeps him from greatness.
He needs to recalibrate his philosophy on dual thread QB's this offseason. It won't happen mid-season but it's beyond obvious he needs to address it aggressively this time.
I think he thought as I did just upgrading the talent would do the trick, it did not. He needs to scheme it better.

He’s not good. His scheme can be exploited and he has no idea how to counter it.
