He is Cignetti's play caller. Cignetti is a QB coach, Shanahan is the mastermind behind their offense. He'll be 36 next year and is an OC/WR coach.

Not saying this is a "fit", but interview him. He clearly knows what he's doing. That offense is ridiculous and they don't have talent. This is their "talent" according to 247:

7 4-stars
55 3-stars

that's their whole team, including transfers.

Offenses since becoming an OC:
2022 JMU - 13th (37 pts/game)
2023 JMU - 23rd (34.1 pts/game)
2024 Indiana - 2nd (41.3 pts/game)
2025 Indiana - 1st (46.4 pts/game)

In case you're wondering if Cignetti is some QB whisperer and that's what makes their offense run, this is their rushing production:

2022 JMU - 186.7 yds/game
2023 JMU - 134.2 yds/game
2024 Indiana - 165.4 yds/game
2025 Indiana - 231.9 yds/game

This year, they use 3 RBs and get great production out of all of them. This guy clearly uses the strengths of the team to it's maximum. If you're the type that wants a young genius that's hungry, Shanahan might be your guy.

Fun fact, not related to the Shanahan NFL coaching family.

The funny thing is it’s only coincidence that his last name is Shanahan and he’s an offensive guru. If he were related to the other Mike and Kyle, he would already have an HC job.

He’s a great OC and will be a head coach one day. Unfortunately it may be a tad early for him to be a successful head coach at a major program, but it also may be only chance LSU ever has for him. Big risk, but maybe one worth taking.

I think this is spot on and is the only thing I question about him.

My son goes to IU so I watch all of their games. Frankly, because that team plays good, sound fundamental football.

One thing I can tell you about IU's offense, is they have a clear identity, and Cig has been more vocal this year about saying how much Mike is calling the plays and he just offers what he sees on occasion.

They take what the defense gives perfectly, and run a great RPO offense. VERY well coached team. I'd take their d-coordinator too.

This dude is making $800k as OC at IU… He would be my top candidate for OC if new HC is not tied to a particular guy.

For reference BB makes $2.5mil and Pete Golding makes $2.6 mil

Wasn't there a Shanahan who was an assistant at LSU in the 1980's?

Yep, them damn youngsters can’t handle the big time. These four had their teams in the playoffs last year with one reaching the final. But, someone else will snatch up a guy like Shanahan and we’ll all complain about “how we should have” down the road.

Gerry D snapped 6 straight losing seasons and landed Kevin Faulk. Was riding high until Lou Tepper showed up with his Incomplete Linebacking.
