Have you ever seen what happened on the blocked FG?

All my years(a bunch), i've never seen that. Seems like the right call was made but dang, who would've known to get away from that?!?

Had never seen that before. The question I had watching was whether the ball bouncing off of a Carolina player's head causes the ball to be "down" or whether that doesn't matter because it was behind the line of scrimmage when contact was made.
Weird play and tough break. Glad the D got it back a few plays later.

Yes but in a Leon Lett on Thanksgiving way. Not just the ball bouncing around. The only reason it even went forward after he blocked it was because it ricocheted off a Panther lineman.

I thought the Leon Lett play was well down the field? You talking about in the snow that time? I guess the same principal applied but who wouldn't jump on the ball at the LOS?!?

That's the exact rule in play here. After that happened players after a block ran from the ball like it was diseased but barely any of these kids playing today even know who Leon Lett was.

Yep. Touched a panthers player, should have been an immediate dead ball

Since we touched it on defensive side of LOS it was a live ball as if we had possession and fumbled. It’s like on a punt where if a punt bounces into a punt returner it’s a live ball for kicking team to recover.

I don't know how it's not dead when bouncing off the Panthers player is why it went past the los.

I don't think so.
Most blocks go backwards and in the ensuing scramble, it must be possessed and downed to be a dead ball. Other blocks go down field a bit. As long as the defensive team doesn't touch it it becomes a dead ball. If they touch it but don't possess it, it is what you had today.

I am 57, so yeah I have seen it before but it is pretty rare. This was just one of them rare times where a blocked FG went past the LOS and was touched in a pile. Almost always the ball goes backwards.

But we never possessed it. Possession never changed hands so the Panthers still needed first down yardage which they did not get.

You are correct. Hit Panther in helmet just like a punt it’s dead ball.

ChatGPT helped me out.
? Relevant NFL Rulebook Sections
Rule 11 — Scrimmage Kicks
ARTICLE 3. KICKING TEAM RECOVERS BEYOND LINE OF SCRIMMAGE
“If a scrimmage kick crosses the line of scrimmage, and is recovered by the kicking team, the ball is dead at the spot of recovery.
If the ball is recovered before the line to gain, it is first down for the receiving team.”
This is the base rule.
So if the Panthers (kicking team) recover past the LOS but short of the sticks, the ball should be dead and become Saints’ ball.

This makes sense.

My guess is that the competition committee will get together in the off-season and change this rule. Clearly, athe Leon Lett situation the ball should go over to the other team.
However, I’m guessing that the competition committee will put in some sort of buffer zone where the blocking team gets to keep the ball even if it’s touched beyond the line of scrimmage. The buffer will be something like 5 to 10 yards.

I think the refs ruled this like it was the Leon Lett play (Thanksgiving, 1993), when really it wasn't.
First, it's a terrible rule. When a defender leaps to block a kick, there's probably a 75-80% chance it's going to bounce off either an offensive or defensive lineman. So the stupid rule is saying that it's OK for a great defensive play's outcome to be determined by a random, unintentional carom of the football.
The ball Sunday hit a Carolina player first. Why didn't Kellen Moore scream bloody murder and challenge the call?
Leon Lett was the first person to touch the blocked Miami kick in 1993, so that was different.
This is one of the worst rules in the NFL book. The other truly horrible one is the one that awards a touchback when a guy fumbles at the 1-yard line and the ball bounces out of bounds in the end zone. Bad rules.
