A lot of reviews are mentioning a shift in direction for the franchise. I'm excited to see what Trachtenberg did with this one.

quote:

IGN

Director Dan Trachtenberg takes his third crack at Yautja lore with Predator: Badlands, and this time the protagonist is the galaxy’s most notorious trophy hunter himself. It’s a pretty wild shift in perspective for the franchise, but one that Trachtenberg pulls off.

quote:

The Wrap

"Predator: Badlands" rewrites the rules of the #Predator franchise with exhilarating, futuristic action and, more importantly, depth and character to spare.

Like John McTiernan's 1987 "Predator," #PredatorBadlands challenges regressive masculine values, TheWrap film critic William Bibbiani says.

quote:

Variety

#PredatorBadlands is an "inspired new entry" in the franchise as director Dan Trachtenberg "finds fresh excitement pairing Elle Fanning as an 'Alien'-style synth with a runt Predator with everything to prove."

quote:

THR

THR’s review of PREDATOR: BADLANDS:
“While there are dismemberments and other bits of gruesome violence to be found in the film, Badlands is largely aimed at endearing its audience rather than repulsing them”

quote:

Discussing Film

PREDATOR: BADLANDS rocks obvi. But on my second watch, the vivid inspirations from George Lucas and video games like Shadow of a Colossus stood out more. A rare case where I think both fans and casual moviegoers will heavily dig this.

quote:

The Hashtag Show

Predator: Badlands at points feels almost Amblin-esque with the coming-of-age plot for both Dek and Thia. For the people worrying about blood, gore, action, or anything else that makes a Predator movie, a Predator movie, that's all here.

The only thing those reviews convinced me of is that this new predator might be a fig

86% on Rotten Tomatoes, which means it's going to be way better than the original, but not quite as good as Prey

I suppose he could mean that despite all their muscles, guns, and bravado Dutch's team was slaughtered like small prey. It took Dutch relying on his brains and instincts to defeat the predator. Same with Prey.

That being said, Predator is still one of the most manliest macho movies of all time imo.

I don't disagree, but Trachtenberg has been solid with his Predator projects

I'm going opening night. Thursday.
Yes I'm excited. I am a huge Predator fan and I'm looking forward to a Yatjua being the primary lead.

i was almost highly highly triggered by this, but then caught the context and simmered down.

I think he is saying the original challenged "masculine values" because the "macho" acting guys all died, but in reality it was just about their hubris more than anything else.

The original predator reminds me of the Ron Swanson quote about Moby Dick, if he had said it unironically:

quote:

"I hate metaphors. That's why my favorite book is Moby Dick. No frou-frou symbolism. Just a good simple tale about a man who hates an animal".

Its about a bunch of buff elite soldiers fighting an alien in the jungle with some underlying "man vs nature" and "hunter vs hunted" type themes, not anything conjured up by woke brainrot meant to smack you over the head.

except for the MOST macho of them who just proved that it takes just not regular levels of macho toxic masculinity to defeat the predator but ARNOLD levels of macho toxic masculinity.

Just my personal opinion, the are making the Predator too humanoid looking.

None of the Pred's in previous films have looked like this.
