Lonesome Dove is unbearable. I get no joy from this conclusion.

I just got through The Border Trilogy, so on the advice of this board and all the online reviews - which are all very, very positive - I started Lonesome Dove, and I was excited about it. But it's like the Taylor Sheridan shows when they try to be funny. It's obvious humor, which would be fine, except it's nearly every line of text is a simpleton premise and punchline. It's exhausting. Cannot carry Cormack McCarthy's books' jock straps, in this poster's opinion.

I'm sure when it came out, it was groundbreaking stuff, kind of like The Beatles. But like the Beatles, the format has been copied and refined a hundred times so that some new versions of the style are superior. Now Lonesome Dove pales in comparison. I just don't like it. I'm extremely disappointed. Does anyone else get this reaction to their first recent reading of the book?

No.
It's my favorite book I've ever read.

I'm offended by the Taylor Sheridan take.
In fact, I'm convinced this is a troll.

To each his own, but…. Damn that’s a wild take.

And if you went in expecting it to be like McCarthy, that’s complete ignorance on your part

It's how I know to discredit this person's opinion on anything.

Do you laugh when Kevin Costner says something wild in his scratchy voice?

I was hoping you'd show up for this one.

As for OP, what exactly were you expecting from the book?

No, the opposite.
I can't believe you're comparing Lonesome Dove to the cowboy soap opera Yellowstone.

But now I can.

It’s the best book I’ve ever read. I’d love to know what new versions of the style you think are superior

I think all three books in the border trilogy are superior. I think No Country for Old Men is Superior.

Apples to oranges. They aren’t even the same genre

I’m listening to it again. Still love it, but again I’m having to endure the endless sob story of July Johnson. I hate the character, and it almost ruins the experience of reading the book.

No, I really liked Lonesome Dove. True Grit even more.

Currently I'm reading Duane's Depressed after several difficult books (mostly sci-fi). McMurtry is a damn great writer. Duane's Depressed is very slow paced so far but the author's observations are wonderful. It's the most fun read in a while. And yeah, Lonesome Dove is better.

I am chuckling because I finished reading Lonesome Dove today and came to this board to start a thread about how much I enjoyed it.

Like you, I came to read it after Cormac McCarthy left me thirsty for more post Blood Meridian and Border trilogy. I think they just have two different styles. I think they each accomplished different goals and made me think about different things.

I wish July Johnson had grown as a person over the course of the story, after having endured so much. He just kind of…stayed the same. That’s nitpicky though. I loved the story overall.

So your tastes run to pretentious douchebags who think they're above punctuation. Four page run-on sentences that don't even really qualify as sentences because they don't say anything just don't appeal to me.
