Just played in a member guest and got smoked by a former professional that played on the mini tour. He was a 4 handicap and got two shots a side
Yes they beat us. Yes I should have played better. But screw it .. sandbaggers freaking suck

I’d say I was sorry, but I’m fond of other people’s money.

I'm sure if it was a blatant sandbagging job that clubs Member-guest committee would have done something about it! My guess is that his handicap is legit and he played well! If there was any significant money involved then I'm sure protest would have been very loud by other teams! Come down to McAllen Country Club where the Calcutta averages 125-150 thousand and see what we do to sandbaggers...

Looks like we found some sandbaggers in this thread.

Probably plus 4
I don’t understand why people sandbag or carry vanity handicaps.
I am what I am.
About 1 in 4 rounds I shoot my number or better.
Sometimes I play bad.
Mostly I play around average which is above my cap by about 2/3 shots.
Handicaps are a measure of potential- not an average of how you play.
Had some clown at member guest tell me “I always beat my handicap.”I said, “Sandbagger.”

I've always thought giving strokes in member guests leads to more sandbagging. They should be flighted and played straight up from there imo.
And the club needs to police it. Ban sandbagging guests and force the member into better flights next time

That’s why I stopped playing in events like that. Too many cheaters.
You can either beat someone or you can’t. I don’t want strokes even if I’m playing against Rory. I’ll just have to get my arse kicked.

Well there's your problem. So dumb to do a net score over a gross in a member guest. Just use the mga handicaps to flight it, not adjust scores.

There needs to be a minimum number of rounds in the weeks/months leading into an event when index is used to determine eligibility.
For events the size as most member - member, member - guest, etc. if you don't have a certain amount of rounds posted in the last ____ weeks or months, you play as a 0.

That’s tough. Lots of guests are clients/friends of members who come in from out if town for football and a fun time. They aren’t avid golfers who play often or maybe even locally. They could have a ghin, but really they’re just there for the drinks, good time, weekend getaway. You don’t want to omit those people and you don’t want them playing in a flight with a bunch of scratch golfers.

I have nearly the same background as that guy (played D1 golf, minitours and cub professional) and I play maybe 6 rounds a year. How would you handicap me??
In my 8 rounds this year (all competitive individual stroke play rounds that required holing all putts), here's what I shot - 85, 79, 81, 82, 76, 75, 75, 69.
The first four rounds were consecutive weekends, then I took a month off, then two more consecutive weekends. It's the only golf I play all year.

No idea the course ratings at those places but I would assume you would be a plus handicap or scratch at worse with those scores.

Then don't require an index. if you require an index there should be some validity to it. if you require an index, it should be validated with recent scores.

The handicap system is complete bs. I get it when it comes to more people playing golf but you should have to beat someone to beat them. More crooks juicing their GHINs than honest people.

My last 6 (3 weeks)
71 - 82 - 72 - 73 - 85 - 74.
82 and 85 were purple tees (1 up from tips). I go back there to work on long irons and fairway woods.

I’ve seen where they take the guest lowest handi in the last 12 months to prevent sandbagging leading up to the tournament.

GHIN is public, look up his scores and post them here. What did he shoot?

CCL does that. So you have guys who sandbag all year.

You’re good.
Low single digits for sure.
Only 8 of 20 count so the high end of your range would not be in calculation.
I’d guess you’d be around 1-3 depending on slope and course rating.
The problem is not good players playing great or somebody having a good day.
The problem is when a couple of 12s blitz the 8th flight by winning 5 matches 7-2 in member guest, and the rest of the flight is a bunch of close matches it means either they are sandbaggers or the rest were vanity handicaps.
Usually flights should workout to within a point or 2 from first to third.
I saw a 22 birdie both par threes one time in a 9 hole Match where I was giving him 8 shots. He played great. I shot my number. We got beat. A group dropped out so each group had to play against par with strokes.
They beat par 8.5 to 0.5.
The rest of us were a range of 4 to 5.5 points.
