Mike Detillier Q&A on DandyDon site

Probably not universal here, but I have always respected Mike Detillier who of course works more related to pro football than college. I've found him to have good insight with LSU...some of course are obvious observations. Anyway, on DandyDon's site he links to the entire Q&A but here are some snipets:
1) Kelly is a good coach but never connected with the players or the alumni/fans (ofl mentioned "cultural fit"
2) He never did understand why LSU couldn't field a good OL since the recruiting was there. He also criticized the defensive line which I have here but some have defended. I say the defensive line is decent on running plays by RBs but the pass rush simply isn't there. Not a physical bunch to be kind
3) Nussmeier has been hurt most of the season as evidenced by his throws many time being short. I will add "lack of velocity"
4) Van Buren should have been used for at least "packages". I think most of us have said that. However, unlike many here, he says Nussmeier should remain the starter
5) Pretty sure this is directed at Sloan "The game plans have been odd, to say the least, and this was Kelly’s wheelhouse on offense. How much did he get involved, and if he didn’t like it, why didn’t he change it?" The game plan answer was in response mainly to Berry who averaged 7 yards per carry vs A&M in the first half, getting 1 carry in the 2nd half
Anyway, he never mentioned a lack iof talent but leaned in more about lack of commitment...basicallly the old 'the players would run through a wall for the coach" which was always a strength of Miles and Orgeron IMO

Thanks for the summary. His takes sound reasonable enough.

I’ve always thought Detillier can be a bit of a clown, but I agree with most of his points here. They’re pretty obvious though, anyone who’s followed this season closely could see the same things.

Sounds like talking points for the people that were sure BK was it.

Kyle Williams has made tremendous strides with the Defensive Line. To throw shade at that group this season is unjust. Despite the injuries, they have held their own for the most part.

I like Detillier, but 85 percent of his comments are reflections of opinions already made. He doesn’t give any fresh takes and his comments in this piece could have been made by any educated football fan.

I read this article as well and I think Mike is right on the money.
However if Nuss is that hurt, why not play VB and we can see what he can do and also for his future for next season.

Not sure I agree with this one.
They have gotten to the QB plenty the problem has been finishing and not making the tackle when they had good pressure.
I haven’t noticed the DL to be “soft”

Mike Detillier has always had interesting takes on football, especially LSU. I also find him very entertaining.

I didn’t know that website was even still around. I used to read it daily every morning. This was 15-20 years ago though. It’s different now but glad to see it’s still going.

Watch #31 Bailey, Texas Tech DE. This is the type of DE LSU needs to get back to. This man absolutely wrecks shite.

Just how many more fresh takes are there? We are to the “beating a dead horse” stage now.

I’ve always thought Detillier made the most obvious observations and then passed them off as him being some expert. I’ve never knocked his hustle, cuz if you can get paid for that, more power to you.
Also, he’s O’s boy. So he struck me as somewhat of a mouthpiece for that regime when O was coach. I’d love to see his take on what went wrong with O.
That said, I agree with most of his points here (again, obvious though some of them may be).
Particularly the last one about Kelly and the offense. When Denbrock left, there was a lot of “it’s Kelly’s offense anyway” type of talk on here. And I was always of the impression that Kelly fielded good rushing offenses at ND and that was kind of his thing. Even though his QBs at ND tended to have some running ability and got you some positive rushing yards to varying degrees (none like Jayden), they still would have a RB1 that got 800-1000 rushing yards on the season.
Why couldn’t/ didn’t Kelly do more to fix that?

Mike likes to hear himself talk, but has good takes.

Detillier's answer to #4 regarding Nussmeier remaining the starter is a political answer.....not a gridiron based answer. I mean, after all, how could you possibly evaluate MVB when he NEVER got to take meaningful snaps even in designed packages.

Detillier will always defend his fellow Cajun buddy
But we all saw LSU quit plenty in 2017, 2020, 2021

Nothing new or insightful there.
Most serious LSU fans knew everything that he said.

You’re impressed with Gooden and McKinley?
Gooden is quick enough off the snap against heavier linemen across from him, but he rarely makes a play when he can get into the backfield.
McKinley’s still young but it’s fair to say he’s not shown anything close to his 5-star ranking. I see a big athletic kid that looks the part but plays more like Jane than Tarzan.
We’ve had plenty of those like Maason Smith. We need more dogs. Period.

The part about the OL where he said Kelly had the physical OL at Notre Dame but didn’t seem to have them at LSU makes you wonder about Davis and whether he’s recruiting the wrong type guys or just isn’t demanding enough from them. I’ve thought Davis has been a problem for the last 2-3 years.
