Who is the US killing in its boat attacks? Hegseth won't say, and lawmakers want answers.

The Trump administration's deadly strikes on boats off the coasts of South America – and the release of multiple survivors back to their home countries – have raised questions about who the U.S. killed and what evidence they had the vessels were transporting drugs.
Trump administration officials say the strikes are part of a sweeping counternarcotics operation. Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth and other officials have said U.S. intelligence determined that the boats carried drugs and passengers on them were parties to criminal trafficking of illegal substances to the U.S.
To date, however, the Defense Department has provided no evidence. As concerns boil over from some lawmakers that these strikes are illegal, Trump administration officials have opted to withhold details, holding a memo justifying the military action close to their chest.
The answers to what officials know and how they know it are there, some have indicated, but the information is not yet accessible to anyone but Republican Senate insiders.

The repatriated survivors raised a new legal question: if the U.S. had enough evidence to attack their boat, why wasn't that evidence sufficient to try them in an American court?

Many of the targeted boats departed from Venezuela, and the strikes appear to be tied to a campaign led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio to force President Nicolás Maduro, the country's left-wing strongman, from power. President Donald Trump has said repeatedly that the next strikes could be on land – although he denied a Wall Street Journal report on Oct. 31 that the U.S. had a ready-to-go list of targets in Venezuela.
The legal memo providing the military's justification for the strikes was reportedly drawn up by the Justice Department – not the Pentagon. Taking that approach is something the CIA calls a "golden shield" within the CIA, Jack Landman Goldsmith, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, wrote in a commentary article. The document protects officials operating under it from criminal prosecution down the line, he wrote.
quote:
"The Pentagon pulled its lawyers – the exact people who would supply a legal justification for these strikes – from the briefing with no notice," Rep. Seth Moulton, a Democrat representing Massachusetts, said on X.
quote:
The strikes also have not targeted the central nodes of the networks that bring drugs into the U.S. Most illegal shipments of fentanyl, one of the deadliest contributors to drug overdoses in the U.S., enter the U.S. by land, from Mexico.

Obviously Maryland fathers trying to get food to their children in blacked out cigarette boats since King Trump canceled their SNAP with a wave of his dog whip ( Hitler also carried a dog whip)

It’s folks headed North with boatloads of fentanyl. Hope this helps.

Tilapia fishermen and they all deserve to have their boats stopped in an orderly fashion, questioned in a comfortable chair, and taken care of in an American prison

This article has some funny parts...
This is cute. I won't even bother to answer it.
J6 Committee, anyone? And the gazillion other autopen pardons backdated years and years?
You don't fuggin say? Y'all also bitch ad moan about Admin47 trying to control the land border, drugs, human trafficking and weapons and the narco-terrorists that are here and getting deported.
How long and for how much money did y'all spend defending "Maryland Man"? And hell, I think he's actually STILL HERE.
It's faster to just kill'em.

They probably refuse to believe anyone’s stupid enough to not already know that. Either that or they don’t think much of those making this a thing and know there’s no point because they don’t matter anyway.

I'm fine with what we are doing but Hegseth could handle the PR better. Go capture one, video document the whole thing, and show people exactly what's onboard.
Another angle to just blowing them up means you don't have to be exposed to the lying MSM during trials, i.e. terrorists still at GITMO.

What? Do you want the dog to wag its own tail?

Congress has an inability to stop themselves from sprinting straight to the press to tell all of the details. This has precluded them from having access to all of the classified details of any operations. Pete is just trying to keep the few that may be innocent from committing treason.

War is hell. Keep up the killing, Pete. Non-traitorous Americans support you, unlike this limp-wristed liberal.

We're in a war with South American civilians?

Using a leftist talking point word for word. Good lord you’ve lost it.

I think there is healthy discussion to be had about whether operations like this should have oversight. 95% of this board will say "no" right now and then change their answer when a Dem gets in office.

When does this actually work? Democrats will spend millions of dollars and so much precious time to free whoever Hegseth would capture. Remember, due process counts double or triple for criminal invaders and drug runners.
