The easiest way to inject a propaganda idea into most people's minds is to let it go through the medium of an entertainment picture when they do not realize that they are being propagandized.

You have never heard of Elmer Davis or the Office of War Information? Funny, I bet you have been told all about German propaganda and Goebbels. Wonder why you know so much about the Germans and almost nothing about American propaganda?

We've been doing propaganda since the Revolutionary War.

We've missed out on some looney tunes gold since 9/11 and modern effeminate sensibilities.

propaganda
noun
pro·?pa·?gan·?da ?prä-p?-'gan-d? ?pro-
Synonyms of propaganda
1
capitalized : a congregation of the Roman curia having jurisdiction over missionary territories and related institutions
2
: the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person
3
: ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one's cause or to damage an opposing cause
also : a public action having such an effect

Propaganda isn't by definition "bad" as long as that is what you know you are looking at, which is not what you are talking about but I thought I would point that out.

Yeah of course the most effective propaganda isn't obvious. The entire world is a psyop at this point

Why is that every time Hitler is talked about it’s what he did during his extermination of Jews and not how he was able to get to the point of being able to do it?

Gun Control and the demonization of Jews.

Wait a minute, which side of the aisle do we hear those two things today?

Nathan Hale didn’t actually say: “I regret that I have but one life to give for my country” on the gallows. They just put the word out that he did.

That’s just one example.

Winners write the history.

But mass programming of the citizenry has been going on since there were mass populations.

Everyone knows of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol (pen name) and the Mad Hatter. Because that's based on the very real world problem that Victorian era hat makers faced when using ionized mercury to make men's hats. "Mad as a hatter" was understood by the audience of the time (1860's) , it was so widely known. But did the govt DO anything about it? Not until the 1940's, because of the war effort, did they put a stop to it.

And folks just accepted it because they were told there's nothing to worry about. .

Sound familiar?

There has always been propaganda in all wars in all nations. It’s necessary to garner support for the war whether it’s a justified conflict or not.

Goebbels was just a master at it and used it for evil purposes

The United States didn’t have to resort to propaganda during WW2. The threat to democracy was clear to western nations.

But we indeed used it.
Reading The Big Show by Pierre Clostermann. IIRC, I got the recommendation from someone on PT. Thanks.

He was a French Pilot flying under the English in WW2.

He mentions the outlandish numbers of German planes claimed to have been shot down by American Pilots for our American News broadcasts.

The main purpose was to offset the incredibly high percent of losses to our bombers and crews doing the daylight raids over Germany. And clearly propaganda.

He also talks in great detail the number of German fighters still being turned out each month even at the end of the war. Pretty amazing considering the industrialized areas above ground were in ruins.

Recommended if a history nerd.
