In the United States, there is no federal requirement for judges to have a law degree

This blows my mind.
I've always wondered how Shaniqua Da Judge graduated from law school & managed to pass the bar exam.
Turns out these Shaniqua judges didn't even attend law school, let alone get a law degree & pass the bar exam.
Idiocracy.

That is actual insanity. Should those states let surgeons who don’t go to medical school or pass boards work while they’re at it?
That’s a disgusting thing if true.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing.
We've had very good non-lawyers on SCOTUS.
I would accept a competent and brilliant business leader over a lot of the lawyers that today's law schools produce.

When I was at LWC most of the administrative law judges didn’t even have a college degree, let alone a law degree. Magistrate judges are basically just Federal ALJs

Good.
Both sides in court present the law in their arguments, even SCOTUS. Then the judge does his own research and judges.
Even law school graduated Supreme Court Justices seldom VOTE 9-0.
A school education doesn’t automatically make you qualified. That’s what the bar examinations are for.

If true ?
It is true.
Teresa Stokes "attended" Cooley Law School.
She does not have a law degree.
She did not pass the bar exam.
She is not a licensed lawyer in North Carolina, but she is a judge

We have some real shithole states in this country.
I thank God every day that I’m from Louisiana and will never leave.

How about surgeons that didn't graduate med school?
Is that also a good thing ?

to become a federal Magistrate Judge you need to be a member of a state bar for 5 years.
Some state let you take the bar without going to law school.

The lawyer arguing your side can't represent you unless he has a law degree and passed the bar exam, and is licensed to practice law in that state.
But the judge determining your fate isn't required to have a law degree or have passed the bar exam ?
And you think that is a good thing ?

Analogies are not arguments and yours is particularly bad.

The lawyer that is representing you in court must...
1. Have a law degree
2. Have passed the Bar Exam
3. Be licensed to practice law in the state.
Yet the Judge is not required to have any of those 3 things.
If you think that makes sense then you are a special kind of stupid

Here are some heavy hitters in the legal field who didn't have law degrees.
Abraham Lincoln
John Marshall
Clarence Darrow
Thomas Jefferson
John Adams
You don't think they would be qualified to be judges?
As far as your comparison to the medical field, I remind you that when members of the legal profession were putting together the United States Constitution, members of the medical profession were using leeches to treat illness.

And here in lies the problem. Being able research and apply the knowledge you’ve gleaned is a skill. I understand how to research things as they pertain to my field but I would be completely lost if I was forced to research vasts amount of case law, interpret it and then craft a legal opinion based upon it to make a ruling that had serious consequences to a persons life… you are putting a lot of faith into individuals to do just that without any type of legal training. You’re really out on a limb if you think a non educated individual with no qualifications other than the color of their skin is who should be sitting in judgement over anyone

I'd rather have a non lawyer judge than one those guys on billboards that says: "Injured in an Accident? Call the 'Man With the Hat! We'll make them pay!!"

The head of the department of health doesn’t have a medical degree so there’s that
Posted on 11/1/25 at 11:11 am to TrueTiger
The first law school in the United States wasn’t founded until around 1780 so the guys from that time period are very much of a different era

You don’t have to have a law degree to be a judge? Fascinating!

These judges didn't pass the bar either. Apparently you "did your own research" and fired off your hot take from just the headline instead of reading the article that was pasted directly into the thread.
