This is so sad. I hope it doesn't make people too upset to take their kids trick-or-treating tonight out of anxiety over their future. Please read at your own risk.

'I Was Just Sobbing in Bed': Harvard Students Distraught as School Says It Gives Out Too Many As
quote:
"The whole entire day, I was crying," said freshman Sophiko Chumburidze, an economics, environmental science, and public policy major who says she believes the fields are "essential to building a more equitable, sustainable world."
"I skipped classes on Monday, and I was just sobbing in bed because I felt like I try so hard in my classes, and my grades aren't even the best. It just felt soul-crushing."
quote:
Zahra Rohaninejad, a freshman who attended a $65,000 a year all-girls school that does not rank students and offers an anti-racist curriculum, said harsher grading practices would minimize her academic "enjoyment."
"I can't reach my maximum level of enjoyment just learning the material because I'm so anxious about the midterm, so anxious about the papers, and because I know it's so harshly graded," she said. "If that standard is raised even more, it's unrealistic to assume that people will enjoy their classes."
quote:
Another freshman, Peyton White, a fellow for the South Carolina Democratic Party and speaker of the United States Senate Youth Program who uses he/him pronouns, said any effort to crack down on grade inflation "attacks the very notion of what Harvard is."
"What makes a Harvard student a Harvard student is their engagement in extracurriculars," he said. "Now we have to throw that all away and just pursue academics."

At Harvard College, the Pass/Fail (PA/FL) option allows students to complete courses with a grade of Pass (equivalent to A through D-) or Fail (equivalent to an E), providing an alternative to letter grading while maintaining academic credit.
How Pass/Fail Works
The PA/FL system evaluates student performance as follows:
Pass (PA): Represents a range of letter grades from A to D-
1
. This indicates that the student has met course requirements satisfactorily.
Fail (FL): Represents the letter grade E only
1
. This denotes work that is unsatisfactory and does not earn credit.
Undergraduate students admitted to a course on a Pass/Fail basis are identified on the grade sheet, and only PA or FL can be submitted for such students
1
. Independent study courses also use PA/FL grading.

When I read the quoted material, I thought for sure this was going to be a Babylon Bee article.
Holy fricking shite.

Wow… that’s a dangerous level of narcissistic entitlement that’s anchoring itself to supposedly intelligent youth. Me me me …over intellectual challenge is a booming issue with our youth.

Soft as baby shite.
There’s a simple solution…set the curve instead of relying on it.

Undergraduate students can take up to 11 courses out of 32 on a PA/FL basis, though traditionally, there has not been a strong culture of using the system widely, as some majors or general education requirements historically required letter grades .
The PA/FL grading option is especially used in independent study courses, while other introductory courses have gradually incorporated related Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (SAT/UNS) policies. For instance, in 2010, there was a proposal to eliminate letter grades in the CS50 course in favor of SAT/UNS, allowing students to receive SAT in place of A through C- and UNS instead of D+ through E.
This initiative led to the successful introduction of SAT/UNS in CS50 in 2013, with the option later becoming the default in 2017.
The PA/FL system provides students flexibility to explore courses outside their primary areas of study without the stress associated with conventional letter grading. It is designed to encourage intellectual exploration, though students’ choice of major or concentration may still limit how many courses they take Pass/Fail .
The system has historically existed alongside standard letter grades, giving students the option to preserve their GPA or approach challenging subjects at lower risk.
.
In summary, Harvard’s pass/fail grading system has been a long-standing feature of undergraduate education, allowing students to take multiple courses PA/FL for both curricular flexibility and academic experimentation, with formal historical evidence of its use going back several decades and specific program implementations, such as in CS50, becoming prominent since 2010

Soooooo instead of going to class to try to learn and take notes to better your grade, you stayed in bed crying? You deserve your bad grades. Bunch of titty babies.

The person doesn't even get "graded" in the traditional sense.

Pretty unreal the colleges have sold the "college experience" angle to students rather than focus on instilling hard work and dedication to the outcome of what you achieve in 4 years. How much money does Harvard cost and they're worried about anything other than maximizing their learning and future success based on their education?
That person is phucked for life. They'll have a mountain of debt and be crying now or in 4 years for how crappy their life is with a Harvard degree and no job prospect.

Wrong. It's cheaper to go to Harvard than most schools.
quote:
Approximately $19,500 per year
The average student at Harvard pays approximately $19,500 per year after all financial aid is factored in, according to recent data. However, the total cost of attendance, including tuition and fees, is around $82,866. Additionally, the average net price for students receiving need-based aid is about $15,126.

$200,000 or less annually
Harvard University has made its education free for families earning $200,000 or less annually, with the expansion of financial aid beginning in the 2025-26 academic year. This means that students from families with incomes below this threshold will not have to pay tuition fees.

Every student at Harvard needs to be required to get into a fist fight.
And cattle prod anyone that's slacking.
