"Dear Tiger Nation:
It is with a heavy heart but also with my typical optimism, that today is my last day serving as your Director of Athletics.
I grew up a few miles from campus, attended Catholic High School, and enrolled at the University that would change my life in 1981. My four years as a LSU student were among the greatest of my life. My career took me into government and public relations before the opportunity to return to my alma mater in 2000 to lead external affairs for the University. Being back on campus each and every day was a true honor. My journey would take me to Seattle and to College Station, before finally returning home in 2019, to LSU and to Baton Rouge.
Others can recap or opine on my tenure and on my decisions over the last six years as Director of Athletics, but I will not. Rather, I will focus on the absolute joy that LSU Athletics brings to our state’s residents and to the Baton Rouge community. I will cherish the incredible relationships I have built within the University community and beyond our campus borders. And I will fondly remember the national and SEC championships for the joy that they brought to our student-athletes, coaches, staff, campus community and our incredible fans.
Our University will always hold a special place in my heart and I will never be too far from LSU. Nanette, Michael, Josh and I wish the Tigers nothing but the best.
Geaux Tigers!"

Don’t write dumb arse contracts to old, unmotivated coaches and you won’t get fired

BK, Sloan and Woody out.
That’s how you cure cancer.

I think the way Landry is handling this is wrong, but I also think Woodward is getting a free pass from this board.
I don’t know many places you can write up a 100 million dollar contract, have it blow up before it’s half way done, and pay 50 million to get out of it without consequences.
I applaud the work he’s done in baseball and women’s basketball, but ADs in the SEC are judged on football.

History will have that Scott hooked his wagon up to Brian Kelly and went all in, only to have it blow up in his face. Chose the wrong horse.

Then you don't really read this board a lot, or maybe you read it somewhat selectively? Woody gets and has gotten plenty of heat here.

Who should he have hired?

Better Offensive Line and Woody and Kelly are both still here

You get out of it by being great at fundraising and making connections, which Woodward was clearly doing very well. People seem to leave that part out when critiquing him.

Probably true but having a good offensive line is Kelly’s responsibility. He has recruited well there, but the guys have not developed. Kelly has made bad hires at the offensive line coach position and the previous defensive coordinator position. A good coach should make good hires.

If I got paid what he got paid I would be skipping around too happy.

Scott, what made you kill the mens basketball program and then double down on stupid when you had an opportunity to fix it?
Posted on 10/31/25 at 6:58 am to Gdellinger
We lost one of the best AD’s in the country and certainly THE best one fornLSU
The guy did more behind the scenes than any other and deserved better than the public display that Landry’s clown show this week.
As a fan, I’m pissed. As a human, I wish better for Woodward. Find greener pastures and Godspeed

Brian Kelly…to a 5 year contract.
In college football, 5 years should be the standard since it takes 3 or so to truly get your players and fully implement your program and change any bad culture.
In year 4, you start talking about extending or finding a new coach.

Mickey Loomis still has a job, doesn't he?

I still don't understand this position. Someone above Woodward still had to approve the contract. Are they going to be fired too?

A lot of y’all have no idea how these contracts work and who is working them
2 big agents - jimmy sexton and Trace Armstrong control the majority of the action. They’re the agents for most of the top guys. Saban etc…
Generally 2 type contracts-
Fixed-
With their top guys, the contracts are not incentive laden. They contain buyout clauses. That is not unusual. The cost of the contract is negotiated but the market sets the price fairly quickly. Today it’s in the range of 12-15 mil a year for top talent.
They’re a lot of variables that can be brought in.
Incentive or non fixed-
Incentive laden contracts like Landry wants, are nice but don’t get accepted by top talent. That’s for up and comers who want to prove themselves. LSU is clearly above that.
So Landry can want to have a more favorable contract but it’s an open market and you either want to play or not. Jimmy and Trace have options.
So complaining about Woodward’s hire of Kelly is ridiculous. He did what the market dictated and the ultimate contract was accepted by all- the board, the president, and the governor.
Now Landry, who is a politician and either a big microphone, has lied and misconstrued either willingly or naively about the situation. He made public comments and inserted himself personally (while ducking the responsibility).
The public comments are totally out of line. That is usually done behind the scenes. He now fed the media and the sports world including agents red meat. He embarrassed LSU.
He has a personal problem with Woodward that goes beyond Kelly. He’s a small and vindictive man with a big microphone. His style is clumsy and obnoxious.
That’s truth. Woodward was LSU. Tireless worker who can build programs. He was incredible at Washington and Tamu. He was underway at LSU but now he gone.
He deserves better and I hope he finds better but whoever gets him is getting a Tiger. Maybe a bitter tiger but he’s purple and gold Baton Rouge born LSU first and foremost.
