Warming up to Kelvin Sheppard

First, I want to just clarify that Sheppard is not the first choice. Obviously the first calls are to Kiffin, Lanning, etc. But if they don't work out for whatever reason, Sheppard is among the top contenders for a number of reasons.
1. Culture fit. As an alum and Louisiana native, he would have the deep appreciation for the school and state that was missing under Kelly. Retaining/hiring the right coaches like Raymond and Wilson, having alumni around the building, recruiting and retaining in-state players.
2. Because he came up under Dan Campbell in Detroit, he likely will bring that same philosophy of grit, toughness, and physicality that we've been missing. Would focus on building from the trenches and get back to the tough mean nasty teams of the late 2000s.
3. Getting a young coach on the rise makes things far easier financially. Landing Kiffin or Lanning would put you in the same situation you were just in with Kelly. While I'm confident that both of those would work out better, you're going to have to give them a fully guaranteed $100m+ contract and marry yourself financially to them for the next decade. I'll say again, if you can go get the big fish do it, but understand that it'll have massive financial implications and at some point boosters won't want to keep paying these massive buyouts.
4. Along those same lines, Sheppard will get NFL head coach offers soon if he stays on this same trajectory. If you can get him now, he'll never leave for another job. You'll have found your Kirby Smart or Brent Key.

If we go “One of Us!” route… then Shepp is the correct call over Wilson

I'd love to hear RC go off if LSU hired a black corch on the cheap

I just don’t understand why he’d want to make that move. Yes, he’d receive more money now, but his success is not a guarantee and he’s almost certainly going to have a NFL head coaching job in the near future.

I'd take him as DC don't know if I'd be okay with HC job. He probably wouldn't make a move as DC unless it was a big pay raise then likely leave for an NFL job in a few years.

I am all fore a coach who can put together the best roster, assistant coaches and maintain it. The concern is he does not have that experience and it is not clear if the Lions defensive performance is because of him or the players they have.

I'm happy for Shep maybe one day just not right now. LSU HAS to hit a home run with the hire. No guessing or hoping on an inexperienced guy. Maybe Shep can go the same route as every other up and comer get a job at a small school. Some of you are hilarious that you want to gamble the hire of one of the best college football jobs in the whole nation on a hope and a prayer.

Yes, I agree
But I really don't think we should go that route

This is just too early for Sheppard. He has zero head coaching experience and almost zero college coaching experience. And This is just his first year as a DC. Don't get me wrong, he's one hell of a defensive coach but I just don't see it right now for Shep. On top of all that who's to say he'd even want to be a college head coach. I'm not saying he absolutely couldn't be a good college head coach right now but there's just too many ? marks there for him to be a serious candidate right now

If Shep continues on his current track, he’ll be an NFL head coach in a couple years
We pass on him now, we may be watching a superstar coach somewhere else when he could have easily been ours.

That’s the big question lsu has to ask themselves. Are they willing to take the chance on bringing in Sheppard right now? Cause if they don’t this will prob be their only real window they can thst guy will be an nfl head coach in 2-3 years tops

Because LSU is in the dumpster right now b/c of Oeaux and BK and is likely another bad hire away from things really being bad. So, they aren't handing the keys over to someone (Kelvin Sheppard) who has never coached a single minute of college football, especially in the SEC. Not really hard to see that.
