This rebuild isn’t going to be solved with one player, we need multiple dudes.

Let me ask you this. Do you think there’s a player - specifically a QB, because that is the only position teams will trade up to #1 for - worth taking at #1?

If the answer is yes, then why would the Saints move off that pick? They need a QB.

If the answer is no, then why would another team trade up when there isn’t a QB worth taking?

Every team has a different ranking on players. What one team thinks is the best QB, another team doesn't think that player is worth their 1st pick.

Mickey would probably trade this year’s number 1 pick for the Broncos first round pick next year straight up.

Obviously, you’re not going to get as much in a trade as if Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow were available. Of course, you’d want to take them.

However, there could be a team that is pretty set at quarterback but might need a strong defensive end or left tackle. In this draft, the Bain kid from Miami and the safety from Ohio State (Downs) could garner a lot of interest.

Of course, the teams that would be looking at guys like this would be teams that would feel that these kids could help them win a Super Bowl in a year or two and aren’t going to have top 10-15 draft picks in the coming years.

However, it’s not like either one of those players is really going to help the Saints do much of anything by themselves. The Saints need a ton of draft picks/new players. And, most importantly, we need a new general manager who knows how to fricking evaluate talent and parlay those draft picks into actual producing players. That person is not Mickey Loomis. He would just waste those draft picks.

I’ll just keep reposting this.

Why can’t people understand this. If there’s somebody worth picking at 1.1, you pick him and don’t think twice. If that person is not there, nobody is going to trade with you.

This isn’t a tails I win, heads you lose situation. You either;
1) Pick a franchise player that is available top 2 or 3 overall, or
2) Give up your opportunity to pick a franchise player and get some picks back in return, or
3) There is no franchise type player available and nobody will give you anything of value for your pick.

This year looks like situation #3.

Broncos took Tim Tebow in the first. Just saying.

Some teams are poorly run. Cleveland could make that call. They fall in love with Indiana's QB or something. You never know.

There is always someone to trade with you, just maybe not the price you see the typical #1 overall going for.

Would we get a Chicago haul for the Bryce Young trade? No.

But you can still get future assets from a team that wants to go from ~5-10 to 1.

Nobody is giving anything worth a crap to jump into a top 3 spot if there isn’t a top 1 or top 2 guys. The team would simply stay put and see if that guy falls because there isn’t that much separation in players.

You need a top QB (not there this year) like a Bryce Young, Jared Goff or a big time player (also not there) like a Travis Hunter, etc.

Let’s look at trades of top 5 picks through the years:
2025: Jags trade up for Travis Hunter, Heisman Trophy winner.
2023: Panthers trade up for Bryce Young, Heisman winning QB. Houston trades up with Cardinals for Will Anderson. Seattle trades Russell Wilson for Broncos #5 pick.
2021: 49ers trade up for QB Trey Lance.
2018: Jets trade up for QB Sam Darnold.
2017: Chicago trades up one spot for QB Mitch Trubisky.
2016: Rams trade up for QB Jared Goff and Philly trades up for QB Carson Wentz.
2014: Buffalo traded up 4 spots for Sammy Watkins.
2013: Miami traded up for Dion Jordan.
2012: Trades up for RG3, Trent Richardson & Matt Kalil.

Those QBs and combine freaks don’t look to be in this draft. You’re not likely to get much in return for any trade.

Team like Titans, Balt & Wash (Cincy @ 11) would all be drafting in the top 10 if the draft were today.

I am sure this type of thinking is built into the valuation. But would you turn down an offer to go from 1 to 8, pickup an extra 2 this year, and future picks including 2027 1st because Balt will most likely be trading in the mid-20s next year?
Hell, I'd argue having two 1sts in 2027 could be a great advantage for moving up if they believe that year's QB crop will be much better than 2026s.

I believe nfl draft history would disagree at this point in the season.

There are no game-changing QBs in the draft. As the Eagles showed last year, you can win with a mediocre QB if you build up your defense and running game. (Hurts was 20th in passing last year, 11th so far this year.) I'm all for trading back, multiple times, and loading up on young, cheap talent.

That is ridiculous.....obviously Loomis would throw in a 3rd to help even out that trade.

That tells me someone will definitely be willing to trade up for Mendoza.

Mendoza has prototype size, solid arm, intelligence and leadership.

He seems like a clear 1.1 to take or trade up for.

Don't worry, Loomis is going to take that #1 and trade up.
