quote:

There has been a lot of smoke forming over the past few days about one particular candidate and this is what I am hearing….

- The hot name on the Virginia Tech coaching search has been former Penn State head coach James Franklin. After speaking with multiple contacts in the agency ranks (none that are directly affiliated with Franklin) and contacts at varying levels of college football and the recruiting industry, I can confirm that the rumors around Franklin and Virginia Tech seem to be picking up steam outside of Blacksburg.

- In my discussions, and based on my experience in coaching searches at Virginia Tech, I am of the opinion that there is mutual interest between the Hokies and Franklin. Does that mean a deal is done or a deal ultimately gets done? No, but it feels like the two parties are communicating. How far in negotiations are they? That is not something I am privy to, but I am hoping to speak with more agent contacts over the next few days and into the weekend to see if I can glean any more intel on this. In my opinion, we should know more about where this is heading by the middle of next week.

- Again, does this mean a deal gets done? It doesn't, but the fact there are multiple contacts from multiple backgrounds saying pretty much the same thing leads me to believe that the Hokies are trying to lock down Franklin as the next head coach. If/when I get anything more concrete, I will be sure to pass it along.

they seem to be legitimately excited based on the comments. they must be really down bad.

He'd be great there and a really good fit culturally. He recruited the Virginia Beach and Richmond area really well at Penn State. That's usually seen as the best recruiting grounds in the state where a lot of great players came out of over the years.

Hopefully so, so now people can shutup about Franklin being a top candidate for the LSU job.

Do they get a discount and let PSU pay him to coach at VT?

That’s a good hire for VA Tech. He’ll have them competing for ACC titles.

Franklin at VT makes too much sense. I’d be very happy with that if I was a VT fan. He was already recruiting Virginia hard while at PSU.

As a VT fan, I will not believe it until it is signed.

I am all on board for JF being the coach. All the people saying he does not win big games, I just want to win again and worry about the championships later.

Our last two coaches have lost to ODU I think 3 times, Liberty, ...no Power 4 outside of the ACC schools in I think since WVU back in 2017 or 18. We have lost to Purdue, WVU twice (Neal Brown WVU), etc..

Brent Pry was terrible. Philip Montgomery who is the interim and has coached 5 games is 3-2 (not exactly) a murders row with lots of opt outs, our best Safety, best CB, DE, etc... He has won more 1 score games at VT than Pry did during his whole tenure.

Anyways, I am ready to be let down.

This is the opposite of Brian Kelly at LSU. Franklin would be such a good fit at VT and would crush there.

VT would consistently be top 25 with a top 15 run every few years with Franklin as coach. That’s so much better than what they’ve had the last decade.

Two things can be true. A guy can be a good coach and not be a national championship coach.

Franklin is a good coach. He has trouble getting over the hump to a national championship caliber coach.
