A California federal judge said she planned to extend her standing order barring the Trump administration from laying off federal workers.

Judge Susan Illston of the US District Court for the Northern District of California said she would grant unions’ request for a preliminary injunction, furthering an expanded temporary restraining order to protect workers represented by eight unions. President Donald Trump carried through on his threats to initiate another wave of layoffs during the government shutdown earlier this month, sending termination notices to at least 4,100 employees.

Illston said at the start of a hearing Tuesday that she planned to extend the freeze after hearing arguments from unions and Trump administration attorneys.

A temporary restraining order typically expires after 14 days, while a preliminary injunction lasts until the judge issues a decision on the merits. The move could hold up the layoffs for weeks.

Just another far-left fricking whackjob Clinton-appointed judge issuing illegal nationwide injunctions. Nothing like forum shopping in Northern California.

President Illston says Trump can’t rule the executive branch.

That judge has no standing. From what I've seen since 2016 you can just make up fricking standing rules as you want to. Sorry judge you have no standing, case dismissed.

There should be a law that when a lower court judge makes a ruling that is in conflict with a decision that SCOTUS has already made on the subject, then that judge is removed from the bench permanently.

Uncle SCOTUS told this fruitcake, in advance, not to do this.

President District Q. Judge somehow won the election yet I don’t recall seeing on the ballot.

Seriously, as long as the Trump Admin bends knee to them, what can you do? His fault. Tell them to stick it high and hard. No need to be fearful of impeachment. POTUS Vance works , too.

This is a purposeful delay tactic hoping for the shutdown to end before this is appealed and overturned.

If anyone hasn't noticed, the judge "signaled" they will grant an injunction at the end of the TRO, not grant the injunction immediately. The SC guideline allows for appealing once the TRO has been given, but not before.

The judge knows this and is purposely dragging out putting the injunction on the record until the TRO runs out, knowing that the administration will instantly appeal. Every day the judge delays is one more day the administration cannot RIF people due to the shutdown. If the shutdown ends, the proceedings are moot, but also the power to RIF due to the shutdown is also no longer available.

4100 isn’t a lot, I’m thinking the Trump-Voaght have dotted all the i’s and want to get this court showdown settled before they really make some cuts, so they may have layed traps

They were working round the clock on this a week before the shutdown took place as they were told the shutdown was 100% certainty. Russ Vought, Mark Calabria, John McKernan, and others at OMB worked round the clock even sleeping at the Eisenhower Building at night for 5 straight days getting everything prepared. The Democrats have no idea what they have done and will be stunned when they see the permanent layoffs come to fruition.

The judge is limiting the impact of the Schumer shutdown and protecting the Democrats from Trump's lawful actions. Trump admin should send out the layoff notices anyway stating that the termination is affective upon court ruling even after the shutdown is over.

Weird none of the greatest legal minds on TD, even ones with a half a million posts care to opine.
