I was all on the Lane Train until I actually did a bit of research, and now the thought of him at LSU makes me uneasy.

Overall - 11-24
At Ole Miss - 7-9

He's very intriguing, and who knows, he still could come to LSU and walk all over the SEC, but I don't see how LSU justifies dropping over $10M a year for a coach who doesn't even have a winning record against ranked teams.

Sigh. There is no home run hire in this era. Lane is competitive with the big dogs at Ole Miss. did you forget how horrendous they were when he took over for Matt Luke?

Ole Miss is a historically arse program. He would have athletes all over the field here with one of the best offenses in college football every year, guaranteed. Plus he’s younger (50) and likeable by fans and players.

I brought this up in another thread. He has a bad record against top 25 and his defenses are historically bad.

And, he only beat us by 5 points. LSU should have easily beat Ole Miss, but Kelly did Kelly things. We want to hire that guy?

Why? Because he's famous?

And, Ole Miss is going to fork over a lot of money to keep him.

If he was 10-0 against ranked teams, he wouldn't be available

Hes at Ole Miss, handcuffed recruiting jammed between other close schools.
Just realize, thise 9 losses were probably to top 5 ranked teams, and OM unranked for the good part of them...just saying he was a huge underdog in most...including the wins

True, I was all for Lane but I'm having a ton of 2nd thoughts now. I'm not sure he's the guy.

So who would you prefer, and what is their record against ranked teams?

It has nothing to do with a sexy hire. He has turned Ole Miss into a consistent winner for the first tome since the 50’s

Only beat us by 5 points in a rebuilding year, with a D2 QB making his first SEC start, and kneeled out the clock instead of taking a walk in touchdown. So let’s say 12 points with an inferior roster.

The resume for the Rant doesn’t actually exist in reality.

He had that last year when they went all in with NIL. He lost to BK and to Napier.

I agree. Lane is not worth what it would cost to get him here IMO.

The “imagine what he could do with LSU’s resources” argument is what got us Brian Kelly. Look how that worked out.

The one advantage I’ll give Lane is that he’s still young and has that fire, and he’s posted 10 digit win seasons consistently in the SEC.

But he does have a problem winning the big games and his teams while great on offense are pretty putrid on defense. And yes OM beat LSU this year, but they didn’t look that much better if we’re honest.

The overall record is disappointing, but he took over a Tennessee program that was a mess and played an SEC schedule with it, and played 5 games against the GOAT (Saban).

I’m not pushing Kiffin, just looking at the record.

What was Ole Miss doing vs ranked opponents before Kiffin?

4 years ago, everyone and their mother would have thought that Dabo Swinney would have been a grand slam hire.

Now, what do you think of Dabo?

I'm coming around to the idea of Dan Lanning.

10-6 against ranked teams
Coaching experience at Georgia, grad assistance under Saban at Bama, and now head coach at Oregon.

42-7 overall career record (85.7%) with a bowl record of 2-1

He's very young but he's very expensive, currently making nearly $11 million a year.

I've seen enough from him to think I want him instead of Kiffin.

I would love Dan Lanning too but I’m not sure he’s attainable. Would take a whole lot to make him leave Oregon.
