Some people lost millions in value and reportedly $3 billion has been lost overall

What the Update Changed

In late October 2025, Valve released a patch that altered the Trade Up Contract system. Players could now exchange five Covert-quality (red-tier) items for a higher-tier item — specifically, knives or gloves from the same collection.
Previously, those items were extremely rare and obtainable only through random case openings, making them some of the most expensive skins in the game.

This update effectively opened a direct route to items that had previously been almost unobtainable, drastically reshaping the market.

Why It Caused a Market Crash

Supply Shock – Allowing trade-ups to knives and gloves suddenly expanded the supply of what were once ultra-rare items. Their rarity — and therefore their market value — dropped sharply.

Panic Selling – As soon as players saw high-end items losing value, many started mass-selling to avoid losses, leading to a cascading price collapse.

Tier Re-valuation – Items used in the new trade-up process (especially cheaper red skins) suddenly became more desirable, while top-tier knives and gloves lost exclusivity.

Speculative Collapse – Many traders treated CS2 skins as investments. The update reminded everyone that the market depends entirely on Valve’s rules, and that those rules can change overnight.

The Scale of the Crash

Within hours, billions of dollars in notional value were wiped out. Estimates suggest the global CS2 skins economy — previously worth about $6 billion — lost $2 to $3 billion.
Some individual knives that had traded for thousands of dollars dropped in value by more than half in a single day.

Who Lost and Who Gained

Collectors and investors saw their inventories plummet in value.

Casual players gained new opportunities to obtain rare items they couldn’t previously afford.

Traders were hit by volatility — some flipped items profitably during the chaos, but most saw heavy losses.

I think I would have gotten out of my loot box skin position before the hammer fell if it was me. Seems like a shaky market to hold enough wealth that would make me consider suicide if I lost it.

It is crazy what markets or what items can develop value and the factors that can rapidly erode said value.

None had time, apparently. Steam dropped the update without telling anyone.

In reality, it was basically a large casino backed by the skins acting as a crypto.

I guess my larger point is that I have very little faith in loot boxes and in game currency/items as a unit of exchange. I wouldn’t be playing in the casino and I damn sure wouldn’t be holding anything long term.

I’m happy for those that got a little money out of that system, but it seems like it was always going to play out this way. Feels odd seeing someone go out due to getting burned on a knife cosmetic, but here we are.

Yea I agree

The skins/knives were no different than the NFT crypto craze. Just pixelated online data with no intrinsic value other than that put on it by the community. A crash was inevitable even without the update, considering the game is 13 years old now. Eventually, the community will move on from it and may have already if the draw of skins and wealth from the skins did not exist.

The wealth is just being in having the ability to amass a fat Steam wallet, to purchase digital licenses to games that could go away at any day as well.

Did one winter event in dota2 long time ago. Sold all the skins on marketplace later and got enough to buy a new AAA title.

As a 1.6 and early Source player, I’m so glad I have no clue what any of this shite means.

I choose to remember Friday night shootouts with the boys in de_rats circa 2005

Wow. This is so dumb. I can't believe someone actually killed themselves over this.
