Pre NIL and a wide open transfer portal, you needed to lock a coach up for 4+ years to build a program and offer stability to recruits who planned on being with the program through thick and thin. Then the coaches' contracts were further extended every couple of years to continue to offer stability to new recruits.

Those days are gone. The right coach can turn a program around in 1 or 2 years. We need to start treating the head coach like a commodity. No long term buyout, get it done in 1 to 2 years or we move on to the next coach. Put our resources towards NIL to solve talent and recruiting deficiencies.

I actually 100% agree with this. Coaches no longer build depth through high school recruiting, half those kids leave anyway. So the “we have our coach locked up for your entire 4 years” pitch is meaningless.

No coach should get more than a 4 year contract with a 2 year extension every 2 years IF they show they can build out a new roster every year and win consistently.

So you expect a coach to leave a job with a guaranteed buyout to take a job without one?

That’s why we’re looking at the blonde girl from UCLA.

Good call here.

I’ll also add contracts need to start being more incentive based.

The ADs need to collude to move the market this direction.

But absent pretty explicit collusion, this is not likely to happen.

No. Those are mostly past era coaches. We want up and coming coaches that are showing signs that they can move fast to turn a program around. Look to smaller schools with recent success not another whale.

Yep. Going after Kiffin (or someone like him) and getting him would only cripple the program.

The problem for LSU is that there is no reason to trust Woodward to make the right move.

A Sunbelt Billy or Butch Jones type with little to no buyout puts your program in a much better position than a BK with a huge buyout. Yes, the wrong person may be hired, but better to do it in a way that you are faced with having to keep them on when you know they can't win or pay 10s of millions of dollars for them to go away.

Let’s go into the market and offer less than anyone else.

I’m fine with that, but then don’t get mad when we don’t hire Kiffin or some other prized coach.

People here are acting like Kiffin wouldn’t demand just as high a salary as BK.

These insane buyouts need to be a case study in Sports Admin degree programs

The market dictates this... not your feelings. I don't like it any more than you. But no decent coach is coming here for a 2-year contract. It's not happening.

One of the ways that Kelly fricked us is that he cleaned out the admin staff when he came over. That admin staff won 3 Nattys with 3 different coaches, but the coaches are the only ones who got that credit. I would be more confident in the next hire being inexperienced if we still had the old backbone in place. Woodward allowed all that to happen and this shouldn't be forgotten.

Go see the ESPN doc on him you’ll understand why he’s not leaving.
