Speaking of McDs..anyone old enough to remember the 1984 Olympic McDs promotion/debacle?

that was epic. similar to the monopoly promotion except the little tickets you got were for the different olympic events.
i think the deal was you got a free big mac if the USA placed GOLD in the event on your ticket, fries if SILVER and maybe a coke if BRONZE.
all well and good until the USSR pulled out at the last minute
my dad, the shrewd king cheap bastard he is, had us going to McDs every day it seemed like and with the US winning just about every competition, you could eat free for weeks.
i think they even ran a story at the time about McDs running out of big mac buns and stuff nationally.
good times. i felt like a millionaire every time i opened a ticket. i think they had a 'tote board' at each McDs at the time with a gold/silver or bronze sticker next to each event so you didn't have to wonder if you were a winner.

Oh yeah. If you got track and field or swimming event you pretty much knew you were getting a free big mac or fries.
You could get 1 free ticket a day so we would walk up there as kids and the summer each day.

istr, the mcds marketing team heavily stacked the ticket deck with lesser events the USA wasn't expected to do well in or even medal so they thought they had it in hand.
then the USSR pulled out and the fun began....
ETA i remember it like it was yesterday walking in w/ a handful of 'shitty' tickets thinking i wasn't going to win anything..and then peeing myself when i saw the tote board with gold, silver and bronze stickers beside those events.
this was 10yo me's version of powerball

One of my former coaches was good for 3 golds and a silver in 84. I forget if he a soph or jr that year at uf, but i remember him saying how much the fellow college kids loved getting all that free food. Unfortunately i was still doing happy meals then, but i feasted in 92 and 96.

I was poor and I got to eat free at work too. And when I’d find tickets on trays or trash, I racked up for my days off.

Damn near guaranteed a Big Mac every visit. Wore our bikes out going up there that summer.

i vaguely remember doing the same thing..amazing how many people just tossed the tickets with their garbage.

McDonald's had to know what they were in for.
The USSR backed out of the Olympics months before the games were to begin., IIRC.
Certainly their ad campaign would have only started maybe weeks before the start of the Games.

McDonald was the number one fast food concept in the 1980s and BR was on an expansion boom. The Valluzzo’s did quite well for themselves.

I made it through a cross country road trip going from McDs to McDs picking up free food.

Sure do, but we didn't eat McDonald's very much. I had one of these and thought it was the coolest gadget on Earth at the time

It was epic. The boycott was great for us, but horrible for McDonalds.

One of the greatest summers of all times.
Team USA cleaned house on the gold medals, so there were a ton of Big Mac/Quarter Pounder winners.

If I remember correctly, we even won the bobsled that year. It was a massacre.
