My Dumb Big Pels Preview

Sons,
If you're like me, you're probably a combination of not just a Pels fan, but a Saints/LSU fan as well.
And it has sucked donkey dick to be a fan of those two teams. Today I am going to do my best to tell you what the Pels are shaping up to be this year.
Pels Strengths: We're going to be fast. Like fast fast for a Willie team. With Ingram and CJ gone, theres going to be less ball stopping players on this team. I'm excited to see what Poole can bring as a pure scorer (hopefully a younger version of CJ with a little more defensive improvement). He's still only 26 years old.
We're also going into a season with a best shape of his pro life Zion. Yes, he's also going to be in the weakness column, but after the 234th injury due to him being fat, he's finally decided enough is enough and put down the twinkies and picked up the lettuce wraps. There's no denying that he looks like an entirely different player. And when he's on the court and right he's absolutely unstoppable.
Trey Murphy is also a year older, and he looks to improve not only his ball handling capabilities, but with Murray out until at least late December/early January, taking over as the initiator on offense. A Zion/Murphy PnR sounds deadly when Poole is hanging around the 3pt line right? I'd love to see what 3 man games we can work with those guys all being at the rim finishers.
Yves Missi, for better and worse, also looks to improve upon his surprising rookie campaign as he's going to be starting for at least the first few weeks of the season. Yes, he's weak as a rim protector, but there's no doubting his ability to change a shots direction and be a garbage man cleaning up misses at the rim.
And don't forget about Herb fricking Jones. Preseason shooting woes aside, lets not forget the last fully healthy season saw him shooting well from 3 and playing all nba defense. He's going to be asked to take on a little bit more of the offensive load (hopefully not too much). Hopefully not too much more because....
Pels Weaknesses: We might be really really bad on defense. I don't think we're going to see a top 10 Willie Green defense like we've seen in the past seasons, and a lot of it is going to be due to our inability to rebound and stop the ball at the rim. Looney was expected to do some of that, but the Pels don't have great defenders in 3/5 starting positions. With Looney out that makes it 4/5. You have a lot of energy guys off the bench in Jose and Bey and that can make some defensive plays, but you lack a lot of defensive big depth and outside of Herb no true elite defenders. That may change with Zion over time, but he's going to be asked to do a lot on offense and has been known to take plays off on d.
Season Outlook: Who the frick knows. There's a lot of uncertainty around this years team. Is skinny Zion going to play 65 plus games? I'm bullish enough on the other guys to say we make the play-in at worst if that happens. There's a lot of offensive talent on this team, and adding a 75% Murray off the bench as a table setter for the 2nd team will only make us better. Its just going to depend on that dirty fricking word every Pels fan hates to hear: Health.
Get ready to flap motherfrickers because we're beating those frickboys in Memphis game one and its gonna be on.

I agree that the defense won't be good until Murray comes back. I think that we're a .500 team until then, and then we make a real push for the #6 seed.

frick I wish i had this much enthusiasm for them this year.
I’ve lost all faith and excitement in this franchise. But I would very much like to be wrong about that.
I for some reason really miss the days of Jose, Naji, Trey, Larry, and Billy coming off the bench. That team energy was so much more fun to watch.

Just to hopefully keep some folks from worrying TOO much about Herb's 3-pt shooting last season...I'd like to state that...if you say Herb shot 30.6% from the 3-pt line last season (with a very small sample size)...you'd be absolutely right...but if you say Herb shot a tad over 36% from the 3-pt line last season (with a very small sample size)...you'd be absolutely MORE right.
Anomalies are funny things...when you're able to identify them. I luv anomalies.

I am more and more excited to see Fears and Queen play big roles this year. I thought they would be more like 11-12th players. But I think they play bigger roles this year, maybe get up to 10-15mpg each. I don't care if it costs us 5-10 wins and we miss the play-in. We need to develop them and set them up for success.
This is the hard truth that we have to face. Both those rookies will be full time starters by year 3. We need to build the infrastructure to support that. So they need consistent minutes year 1. Then more year 2..

I say we are a 47 win team

The 5 is what’s going to kill us. Not having a decent big will be the Pelicans biggest problem

I'm much more encouraged by Missi after seeing him in preseason vs what I saw from him in the summer league and his rookie season. I think he'll be competent enough.

25 win team, hard to avoid 0-4 and it all starts tomorrow.

it seems likely that over the grind of the season the inability to rebound and defend the half court will be fatal. On the other side the pels are going to have to work really hard for their shots and hit their free throws
and stay healthy
it’s a lot to ask

The shots has come easy for our big 3. We even look better in the halfcourt compared to the last couple of seasons.
None of that dribbling the air out of the ball for 20 seconds only for a bailout shot, a shitty contested mid range, or taking turns running iso.
3 pointers haven't fell for the role guys but the shots they're getting are good open shots in the flow of the offense.
The space has been good with Trey and Poole on the court. Zion has a lot to work with. And Trey and Poole are also benefitting from it.

I like our team on paper and Im excited to see a different look without BI and CJ... but that schedule is just insane to start
We could easily be 1-7 or something and the wheels start coming off real quick
Hopefully we can hang in there but if I were betting my house I'd say the most realistic positive outlook is probably play-in team

The problem Willie has is he doesn’t like to play rookies and that will conflict with Joe.He needs to let fears And queen get playing time to improve this team long .We will see if this happens.

47-32 over the next 79 would be a hell of a turnaround.

I know you are taking victory laps right now and it was a horrific game. So congratulations. But some of us have a vested interst in this team getting better. I always knew we would struggle early. I did not want them to press the rookies into this big of roles this early. I'm counting on us to make a late surge to get over 30+ wins.
It's pretty apparent that Green is a dead man walking and the team has tuned him out. I think they will give him 3 more games to hang himself. No matter what, there is a move coming there soon.
Murphy is lost and needs to do less. Just embrace a 3&D role and get his numbers. Zion missing tonight is beyond deflating. We have to have him play. Not only to win, but to build any kind of trade value.
Lastly, we need a come to Jesus talk about Jones. He's not a starter. He can't play 25+ minutes because he fouls too much, has no stamina and has no offensive game. He's a role player. A great one on a good team, but that's what he is. If some team is willing to give us good value, I think it's time to shop him..

No interest in victory laps; until everyone sees ownership is THE issue and critiques of players, coaches, and management is fools errand nothing can improve.
