I shoot clays maybe twice a year in charity tournaments and am tired of showing up with my semiauto. I was looking at the browning citori, but didn't want to drop that much money unless I was shooting more? Is there another over/under at a lower price point that is good quality? or is it worth it to just spend the money and get something nicer?

My brother and the Mrs both have Yildiz O/U from Academy. My brother has the 12ga and the Mrs has a 20ga. Both nice guns, not issues with them. Theyre pretty bare bones and a little stiff out the box, but nothing to complain about. Both have killed many clays and my brother has shot quail and pheasant with his too.

I will only say that my citori is the sweetest swinging shotgun I’ve ever owned for wingshooting. It’s like an extension of your body. Mine is 30+ years old and while it has some dings and scratches it shoots like the day it came out the box. I don’t really have an attachment to any of my guns except that one, it’s the only one I care about. It has a name and everything

if you shoot one you’ll know

Mossberg Silver Reserve may be a good place to start.

Yildiz O/U from Academy

Yildiz 12 gauge ($400) was my first buy for clays when I got tired of my 1100 with fixed modified choke.

The Yildiz is light, and a round of clays would leave my shoulder black and blue from its hard kicking.

Moved up to a Beretta Silver Pigeon O/U ($1,900 then; probably $2,300 now), and it is so much nicer. It's heft, combined with a vest with a shoulder pad, makes recoil a non-issue.

This may be relevant to other O/U as well: I got a sporting model as opposed to the field (hunting) model. The sporting is a little heavier, slightly different geometry more suitable for clays, and (most important) does not have auto-safety.

A field model's automatic safety will put the gun on safety every time the action is opened to reload. The sporting model has a manual safety that stays where you leave it. For clays, this is convenient, because you don't have to remember to click the safety each time you reload in the stand.

I bought a better cushion for mine, the sport model weighs a little more.

This is a valuable lesson most people getting into shooting probably don't know until after they shoot the gun.

Have this one from TriStar and find it really nice for the price point:

Weatherby Orion is hard to beat for the money. Goes bang every time and shoots straight.

browning citori

I’ve never shot a citori, but I love my Ruger red label. There are some nice ones on gunbroker right now.
