New Georgia Project, voting group founded by Stacey Abrams, closes
Former lawmaker, gubernatorial candidate founded organization in 2013.
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - After what has been a year of fines, layoffs and instability, the New Georgia Project, a group founded by Stacey Abrams, has shut its doors for good.
Abrams founded the New Georgia Project in 2013, but stepped down in 2017 saying she had no role with the group thereafter. The Atlanta Democrat served in the state House from 2007-14, including a period as House minority leader.
Georgia U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock, a close Abrams ally and Baptist minister, was listed as the New Georgia Project’s CEO on corporate filings in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
In a statement Thursday, the group said since its founding, it has believed that “every voice matters and that democracy thrives when people are informed, organized and empowered.”
“Together with our supporters, partners and the broader ecosystem, we have worked tirelessly to bring that vision to life,” the group said. “For your trust, partnership, and years of dedication, we offer our deepest gratitude.”
New Georgia Project’s goal was to register more non-white and young voters in Georgia and to urge them to turn out. The organization was credited with helping Abrams turn out more votes in her 2018 Georgia gubernatorial campaign.
